BUT - could he be the one born Wales?

Fred, personally I'd start with the marriage certificate as you're sure of Eliza as his wife, at least the marriage cert will confirm his father.

Please, Fred, don't rule out people because of a slight difference in the way a name is recorded.

As a general rule Davis is English, and Davies is Welsh, but that isn't set in stone.

It would be advisable to find the record of the marriage, and if you find it, get a copy, so that you know who he said his father was

Fred, names mutate over the years and in order to get over your brick walls you have to investigate variants of the same name. A Davis could become a Davies and vice versa.

Often people were barely (if at all) literate so mightn't have even known how their names were actually spelled - they wouldn't be any the wiser if the census enumerator recorded them as e.g. Davis or Davies.

Same goes for birth years, anything up to +/- 5 year variance on records is not at all unusual.

How have you worked back to Henry - is he a direct ancestor? If so, what is your line to him? Have you bought any certificates (birth, marriage) to get further information?

As I say hit a wall, don't know where he was born , Wales or Sunderland defo Davies not Davis, born 1847 Eliza was he's wife but that's it can't find anymore, I've totally hit a blank, had some promising leads but they came to nothing
