Thanks again ... it does indeed look like he was a home child. Both his parents died quite young and he and his siblings were taken in by an aunt. Yes, his mother was a Snowdon.
Thanks everyone for all your help.

On the 1930 arrival in Canada posted above, John was an office boy but intended doing land work. His passage had been paid by the government and his onward destination was the Church of England Boys Brassey Hostel, Indian Head, Sask.

His birthplace is given as Waterloo and the address of 3 Upper Baker Street was that of his aunt Mrs J Mills Griffiths.

All of the other passengers on that particular page are lads of a similar age, all passages paid by the government and all headed to various C of E hostels.

ADDED: Looking at Collections Canada he is included as a home child

Yvonne - on the birth record posted above the "Snowdon" denotes the mother's maiden name. :-)

Thanks so much for this info. The return journey in 1934 is definitely his as his home address was 3 Upper Baker Street. Maybe he returned because he couldn't find work. The birth above for Jun 1913, Farrer John Snowdon, is his. He didn't have a middle name but his mother's maiden name was Snowdon.
As to his posting to Australia, I think you might be right Sylvia. If he was in the RAF he probably did fly on a military plane.
Thanks again.

If he was posted to Australia, I wonder if he went on a troop ship (or even flew in a military plane down under)

in which case, I doubt there will be a passenger list for him

If this is his outward journey, his NOK address was 3 Upper Baker Street, so that is him returning in the1934 record above.

Have you discounted this one? Perhaps he didn't stay in Saskatchewan but moved around, or perhaps he broke his journey:

Hi
I have a record of John Farrer (born 1913) leaving UK for Saskatchewan, Canada, in Mar 1930. The record says he intended to stay in Canada but we know he came back to UK and married in 1939. He died in UK in 1992. I've been told that he was in the RAF (wartime) and went (posted ??) to Australia. I can't find any record of him coming back to UK or any posting to Australia. Can anyone else have better luck than me?

Thanks.
