Thanks for the info on Gorseinon.William may not have known exactly where he was born. In those days people tended to move around a lot more ie lodging with other members of family. :-)

Have now come to the conclusion that the William who was still single in 1871 is a different William. There were so many of the same name born in the same town in the same year. I am looking into everything being posted and double checking anything I can find so please all continue to contribute where you can. :-)

Gorseinon is in the right area - close to Morriston and Swansea

Not sure about the 1871 census Mike, if he married in Q1 1871 why would he be down as unmarried on the census taken 2/4/1871? Although I does look like the right family.

So where was Alice in 1871 - although there is a likely candidate still going by the name John:

So probably related to the family, maybe Ann John was Mary Thomas's mother rather than James's.

John's occupation was 'labourer'.

I have seen this info. previously while I was searching but was thrown because in the census' I have seen William is down as born in Gorseinon. Maybe they are close by. I shall have to look on the maps. I will now investigate this further info from Mike. :-)
