Megs Dicky Island Report 2 Jul 2014 09:07

Could someone please look up Martha Catchpole on 1901 census please. She was born 1851 Yarmouth, married Benjamin Catchpole but could possibly be a widow by this time.
Thank you
Meg

There are two on there but both down as single.

What else do you know about her please?

Parents?

Did they have any children?

Martha Cook had two children before she married, Henry G Cook and Mary A E Cook. I have most of the information for the children it just Martha I'm struggling with.
In the 1911 Census at 7b, Row 45, North Quay, Yarmouth: Henry Cooke, Head, 23, Single, Fisherman (Herring Fishing), Worker, Born Great Yarmouth; Mary Catchpole, Mother, 51, Widow, Charwoman, born Great Yarmouth; Ellen Chase, Boarder, 36, Widow, Born Great Yarmouth.

Trying to build up a picture. Purely because this Benjamin is in Yarmouth in 1891 just a couple of years before the marriage - is this the Benjamin that married Martha? If so I'm not able to pin point him or any of his family on earlier census

This is definitely Martha on 1911 census as Henry married in 1911 and has the same address.

Sorry greyghost, don't have any information on Benjamin as yet, as need to get marriage certificate.

I have Martha Cook 1881 census with daughter Mary living in Yarmouth with a William Grimmer. Says born 1852, I don't have her birth certificate but am sure she was born 1851 as her mother Elizabeth died shortly after she was born.

Potty Report 2 Jul 2014 10:28

The Martha Cook in the 1881 is shown as single - the Mary Catchpole in the 1911 is shown as the widow of Henry Cook's brother. So, unless Martha Cook married a Mr Cooke, it doesn't look as if it is the same woman.

Edit: just checked the 1911 image, and Mary is shown as Henry's mother!

Does Henry give a father on his marriage cert?

This one does show Mary the daughter if Martha.

The 1911 info I have shows Henry as head as Mary Catchpole as mother.
Henry was born illegitimate.

A tree on ancestry has the death for Henry George Cook (who married Jessie Maud Gedge in 1911) in Scotland in 1940. There is an image of the death cert, which being Scottish, gives his parents - Richard Cook and Martha Cook - maiden surname unknown. Richard was a Fisherman.

There is also an image of the marriage cert for Henry, which also gives his father as Richard Cook, fisherman.

Hello Potty, the tree your looking at is mine, Henry was my g grandfather. He was born in the workhouse, think he made up his father to save face. He actually told his children he was an orphan and never mentioned his mother or sister to them.

I can find Henry in the workhouse in 1891. I see from your tree that you do not have much on his sister. Do you have her marriage to William Lee in 1899 and Henry is with them on the 1901 census (she is shown as Emma).

Yes I have that thanks Potty, need to do some updating.
Haven't done anything for a couple of years but a lot of the cook family has only just come to light.
