Florence61 Report 17 Jun 2014 21:54

Hi folks, sorry havent been back but we had 2 accidents on friday and my young neighbour of 24 sadly died at tea time today so have been rather preoccupied.

Thankyou for the additional info. catherine/caroline I agree could be a possibility.

I didnt think it was going to be so difficult as thought maybe i had missed something obvious but not so.

She is on the 1911 census in west ashford, living with her son james. Poss that she moved afterwards but where to, that may take some time to find!

Thankyou everyone who has contributed so far. I am very grateful for all the info.

i will be looking into the family a bit more and where others were living in 1911 and see if that throws up anything but wont be til after the weekend as i have a wake and funeral over the next few days.

Thankyou again

I agree that the Caroline record is worth investigating ... censuses show that the two names, Caroline and Catherine, were sometimes treated as interchangeable or mistaken one for the other (that is, a Catherine in one census will be Caroline in the next or vice versa)

if only Ancestry had not gone down this evening I'd have more of a look around for a Caroline too ...

... using familysearch as a substitute, our Catherine's census records all show up there, but none for a Caroline in Ashford

Catherine

Catherine Report 16 Jun 2014 15:48

I saw that Caroline Skinner death record and had the same reaction. I certainly don't think that it can be dismissed.

Gee

Gee Report 16 Jun 2014 15:11

This may be a really dumb long shot. I am wondering if Catherine was registered as Caroline, either by mistake or the informant got her name wrong?

1911 census shows the following Catherine Skinner's b1836 +/- 5 years
St Albans, Herts b 1833
Ashford, Kent b 1835
Depwade, Norfolk b 1836
Cheltenham, Glos b 1838
Godstone, Surrey b 1841 (Spelt with a K)

Catherine Skinner deaths b 1836 +/- 5 years
1925 (b 1840) Bristol
1926 (b 1834) Depwade
1920 (b1832) St Albans
1920 (b1840) Godstone (spelt with the K)
1917 (b1839) Epsom, Surrey (Katherine J)
1911 (b 1832 Allahabad, India (British India Office deaths and Burials)

Which would appear to leave Catherine in Ashford as missing as the others seem to be close matches to a year or so and for area. Obviously cannot be ruled out unless proven. (Unless she travelled out to India after 1911 aged 75+ !!)

What about======Katherine as a spelling,

One died in 1920 as Katherine - age given as 80,,but that could be a guess,,,,,,,it was in Godstone Surrey a fair way from Ashford but maybe family lived there.

Catherine Elis Roots married William Ball:-

.................so she looks like Catherine's maiden name was Arthur.

Thanks to you all for your help. It is a bit of a mystery. I did wonder if she remarried but she was over 70 when stepehn died so seems unlikely.

wish the 1921 census was available as if she was dead then, it would narrow it down a bit.

nevermind will keep looking. did try other sites too but no luck.

Thanks again

3 trees on Ancestry have her death as 1917, St Peters, Bridge, Kent. None of them have any sources. I wonder if it is burial rather than a death?

Edit: forget this - that Catherine was the daughter of a Stephen Skinner and married a Mr Dunk.

Have you looked to see if any of her other children lived outside the Ashford area after 1911? Just wondering , as I can't see a death, whether she was visiting one of her other children when she died?
