In my first post, I meant to say:

Using one of the local indexes at: http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/local_bmd
In this case http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk/

but I forgot to add the first URL.
The split betweeen Lancs & Ches is the modern one, not the historical one - similarly, Lancs in Furness is under Cumbria here.

Perhaps but I suppose he would have known from when he married?

The only certificate I have is for my ancestor Harriet, born 1843 - and it states:

First of January 1843 at Runcorn
Harriet
Girl
Samuel Thompson
Margaret Thompson formerly Walker
Labourer
M Thompson, Mother, her 'X' mark, Runcorn
Eleventh of January 1843

Who registered the births Peter? If it was her husband he may have just assumed that was her name....as that was his inlaws name

No checking back then, One of my gt gt gt grandmothers Is down as a married women on her 8 childrens birth certs and no mention that she had been married before.....did eventually marry the childrens father...26 years after the 1st child was born

Peter

Peter Report 13 Jun 2014 14:04

That is fantastic mgnv - didn't know Cheshire BMD had such information.

Interesting though that although Margaret was married as PERRY she was recorded as WALKER on her children's births.

Strange.

NB If you look up the film # in the FS catalog, it tells you what church record was being filmed.

As you'll have noticed, the local index contains info that is not found in the GRO index.
It has to contain the subdistrict/church, but this can be hidden in a code in the local ref, and isn't always made explicit, like here.
This local index has some extra info, like the mum's maiden surname pre-1911, and the age at death pre-1866.

True Jax, thanks for sharing.

jax

jax Report 12 Jun 2014 20:58

I have found 14 out of 15 (1 must of died soon after birth) of my grandmothers siblings baptisms but not one for her....Her parents moved from Islington to Walthamstow when she was born so would not be on the London baptisms....but checked on Seax for Essex records....still nothing

So have a feeling they didn't bother with her...different church ect

Also if your Margaret was illigitamate, maybe the Vicar wasn't keen to baptise her?

Peter

Peter Report 12 Jun 2014 20:16

That's true Jax, but seems odd when her siblings or half siblings were baptised.

And thank you Ann ... not sure if those entries pertain BUT they are probably connected somehow. Will have a look.
