Well, it looks like that death was the correct one then - well found Astra for the 1911 !

You have all been busy on this while I have been out :-)

I had found another possible child for Edward and Elizabeth but I don't know what happened to her?

Hi astra
Well it seems she now considers herself married to maybe John Smith? I wonder then if James was actually John Smith's child

Despite the baptism record to the contrary. Would be interesting to see what was actually on the birth certificate..perhaps she didn't find out about Sarah until after James was born..who knows...
Thankyou for that information from the census..seems atleastvthat it is the correct elizabeth and correct death in 1912. It's a shame it's a public grave .

Shirley, don't know if these are your Edward Marland but thought I'd post them just in case. From newspaper archives:

Burnley Gazette 21 November 1874
Edward Marland was charged with brutally assaulting his wife. The presiding magistrate sent him to gaol for two months with hard labour. (No address or wife's name)

Burnley Express 04 June 1881
Edward Marland, labourer of Nelson, on the evidence P.C. Thornton, was fined 5s. and costs, for having been drunk on the 22nd ult.
(Several more like this)

You could, if you wished, delete your duplicate posts.

Just looking again...I suppose, even though James was baptised as Edwards child..there is no proof edward is the father unless I see the birth certificate..if she was living with this John Smith he may have been her partner. I am assuming edward was the one in the wrong..but I suppose he and Elizabeth May have been happy with the situation. And maybe even Sarah was aware of the situation...if it is correct that edward was married to both women. It definitely needs more work and proofs.
Thanks for all your help

Hi dea
Alice and Elizabeth are together in the work house on one of the census. I don't think the Preston one will be my elizabeth. It's not near burnley at all really. They only moved the registers there recently...I think he was definitely with two women at the same time. He wasn't telling the truth about being a widow at his marriage.
In fact he went on to have James in 1892 with elizabeth after his marriage to Sarah.
I am going to try track down how it can be proved he was living two lives. Maybe elizabeth knew what he was doing and accepted it?
The Stephenson square one is the right area..think I will need to get her death certificate to see who the informant was.
Thanks for all your hard work...I'm going to print it all off and double check because maybe I have missed something somewhere.
Thankyou

:-)

There were at least two births for Marland/Wilkinson:

Lancashire Birth indexes for the years: 1889
Surname Forename(s) Sub-District Registers At Mother's Maiden Name Reference
MARLAND Alice Burnley Preston WILKINSON BU/184/65

Births 1892:
MARLAND James Burnley Preston WILKINSON BU/206/34

This appears to be the family on 1901 but no Edward:

This is where the info comes from - marriage to Sarah has him as a widower so we need to find a death for Elizabeth:

Marriage: 8 Nov 1889 St Luke, Brierfield, Lancashire, England
Edward Marland - (X), 32, Brickmaker, Widower, Brierfield
Sarah Robinson - 26, Winder, Spinster, Brierfield
Groom's Father: Joshua Marland, Brickmaker
Bride's Father: William Robinson, Labourer
Witness: William Robinson; Ellen Robinson
Married by Banns by: Edward Jobson Vicar
Notes: [Note in margin] In entgry No 171 Cols 2 and 7 and in the attestation, for
Marlin read Marland. Corrected on the 3rd Feb 1917 by me, Thomas Smith Vicar in the
presence of Edward Marland and Sarah Marland the partners married

Yes..James born 1892..baptised as edward and Elizabeth's child...even after he had married Sarah Robinson in brierfield in 1889. Elizabeth I think did not die until 1912...in 1917 edward and Sarah went to church to say mistake made on marriage certificate with Edwards name..not edward marlin or malin...seems suspicious to me .

Shirley

Shirley Report 4 Jun 2014 22:40

No...just hoping I'm right with maiden name for elizabeth..his first wife...think they had another child together..maybe even two more..James, and first, elizabeth Ann. Think James born after his marriage to Sarah Robinson in 1889.
