Thanks ArgyllGran. It's strange that they're on a different page - maybe in the US they add people who usually live in the household. Since it's 1940 do you think they could both be in the military? I know that Harold M. joined the military and was in the UK where he met and married his wife in 1944.
It's a very confusing family.

in 1940, Harold and brother Wilbur are listed separately from their parents. I mean, they're in the same household, but listed out of sequence, on another page.

Harold & Wilbur - transcription's a mess on Ancestry (surprise!) - they're transcribed as being in the same household as people with surnames Hicks and Boswell, but they're a different household, so I've deleted them here - :

Thanks Margee. I've contacted a couple of people with trees on Ancestry so it'll be interesting to see what they come back with. Considering I had almost nothing to go on when I started this, it's now becoming quite a picture thanks to you. Harold Marshall Oliver still remains a bit of a mystery though - wish I could find his death.
Thanks

MargaretM Report 3 Jun 2014 17:43

Just to confuse things further, a tree on Ancestry says that Myrtle Willard's sister, Ethel Mildred (Millie) married Henry Oliver's brother, William Francis. The poster must have a close connection, there are photos of Midred & William Francis and also of their son Kenneth Henry Oliver.

MargaretM Report 3 Jun 2014 17:25

There are also attestation papers for Henry Huggard Oliver who was born 25 May 1871, Guelph. He gives name of next-of-kin as wife Isabel Emma Oliver, 9 Strange St., Guelph. He enlisted 27 Dec. 1915.

Yvonne Report 3 Jun 2014 17:05

I've just seen a death for Myrtle G. Willard in a tree on Ancestry. The death is given as 10 Nov 1924 in Wayne, Michigan. There's also a marriage to Anna in 1926 in Wayne, Michigan, so it looks as though I\we are on the right track. The info is on a couple of trees but the children of Harry/Henry and Myrtle and Anna are private - have sent off requests. One tree also shows a death for Anna in 1952 in Michigan but no details. There are also no marriage details so I don't have Anna's surname before marriage but going back to Margee's comment at the beginning of this thread, Anna could've been married before. It's so confusing.

Now I'm totally confused ... going to have to sit with pen and paper, the Luddite way, and try to make some sense of all this. I've just been looking at a tree on Ancestry and it seems that the whole male line has been Harry, Harold or Henry, just to confuse me even more.
I also can't get my head around enlisting in the Canadian military then his draft into the US military, or am I mis-reading that?
Then, I go back to the beginning of my thread and wonder what happened to Margaret/Myrtle after 1920 US census.
Thanks for all this info.

Then there's this draft registration in USA. He registered 21 May 1916.

On the basis of Margee's posting of 1911 census, Henry Huggard is the same person as Harry Henry.
Same address in Guelph.

The one who enlisted says he's not married.

His address was 9 Strange Street, Guelph., which was also his father's address.
[EDIT: Same address as 1911 posted above.]
He's an auto trimmer.

But is Harry Henry Oliver the same person as Henry Huggard Oliver?

I'm totally confused!

The right family in 1911?

Here's the birth of the one who married Margaret:

Ontario, Canada Births, 1869-1913 about Henry Huggard Oliver
Name: Henry Huggard Oliver
Date of Birth: 16 May 1896
Gender: Male
Birth County or District: Wellington
Father's Name: Henry Huggard Oliver
Mother's name: Isabella E Fairburn
Archive Name: Archives of Ontario
Archive Series: MS929

So, assuming it's the same person who enlisted in 1916, the enlistment record has his YOB wrong by one year.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 3 Jun 2014 11:59

So to recap - if we've got the right Henry /Harry:

he enlisted on 2 Feb 1916, married on 17 Feb 1916, and went to Detroit in May 1916?

The one who married Margaret Willard in 1916 is called Henry in the marriage record, and Margaret's father is Albert. One would think that either the registrar was having a really bad day for mistakes, or this is a different couple.

But both M Willards are born in Detroit in 1898; their mothers have very similar first names (Lessa / Dessa); both Harry and Henry are born in Guelph - too many concidences to be different people.

Perhaps he was escorting Myrtle home to Detroit, so that she could stay with her parents while he was away in the Army?

Yvonne

Yvonne Report 3 Jun 2014 01:52

Thanks Margee - it does seem to be the same one. It's strange that he enlisted in Canadian military then moved to US.

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 3 Jun 2014 01:17

Curiously this Harry Henry Oliver enlisted 2 Feb. 1916. Is he the one who married 2 weeks later and then moved to USA 3 months later?

Thanks for all this info ... don't know how you guys do it but you never cease to amaze me. I'll have to digest the info you've given me and see where it fits in ... too many Harrys at first reading! Guelph, Ontario, is definitely in the picture so it's looking pretty good.
Thanks so much.

Or maybe this is her. Mother's name could be the same as Margaret's mother, depending on transcription, but father is Richard, not Albert:
