Find Ancestors

Hi

My relative, Jane Wesson, is on 1891 census as Jane Weston, living in Croydon but as being born in 1818 Swartley (Ancestry) or Swantley (FMP), both in Oxfordshire. I can't find either of those places on a map, and don't know the area at all. Any suggestions please for where she might have been born?

Other censuses show her as being born in Warwickshire, Malden in Surrey, Mitcham in Surrey, so I really have no idea.

Yes Mike that's her. I forgot the Sunbely birth place. Can't find that place either!

Where was she married? It would most likely be close to where she was born, of not the same place.

I can't find where she was married yet, but it doesn't appear to be in Croydon, where she lived from at least 1841. It isn't helped that her husband James also has several different birth places according to censuses. these include Bromley Kent, Malding in Surrey and Dudley Oxfordshire. I thought that the last one seemed hopeful but I can't see that Dudley would ever have been in Oxfordshire - isn't it too far north?

I've looked at that marriage before, and it's definitely a possible. Their oldest child (by 1841 census) was born about then. I've tried Surrey marriages but can't find any more details than that.

No, I remember now. I explored that for a while, but James and Jane Weston appear together in later censuses, born Ashstead I believe. I can't find where Malden is either. So frustrating.

Old Malden and New Malden are just to the east of Surbiton, Surrey

Maldon is a town on the Blackwater estuary in Essex

I know of New Malden, but had no idea that such a place as Old Malden exists.

Old Malden is slightly south of New Malden. It is on Memory-Map.
