I have now found this baptism for a Sarah Robinson in the non conformist records at Mytholmroyd , with the same parents as Francis Robinson.

It's my belief that this must be the Sarah who married John Steel in 1828, as her and John Steel's son Joseph was described as nephew to, and living with, FrancisRobinsonl born c1819 Mytholmroyd in census 1851, and her son John Steel jr was living with Francis's widow Amelia in census 1861, also described as nephew:

However West Yorkshire baptisms just say Mary:

West Yorkshire, England, Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1512-1812

Name: Sarah Robinson
Birth Date: 25 Jun 1808
Event Date: 10 Jul 1808
Event Type: Baptism
Parish: Ilkley
Mother's name: Mary Robinson

The image does state mother was a spinster, but her name seems to start Mary and then have another 3 or 4 letters. It might even be that one name was written originally, and then overwritten and/or corrected to Mary. Maybe someone else could take a look?

So how does that Sarah Robinson connect to Francis Robinson born c1810 Mytholmroyd, who is presumably uncle (as his widow is aunt) to the children of Sarah Robinson and John Steel?

Ilkley would be a lot more convenient to Addingham where Sarah married, than Mytholmroyd, which is given as Francis Robinson's birthplace in census 1851, when he has his nephew, Sarah's son Joseph Robinson Steel living with him .

Baptism for John Steel 1801 and marriage to Sarah Robinson in 1828 already posted earlier in this thread, and image of baptism sent by pm.

Having trouble finding baptism records for the relevant period for Mytholmroyd (transcribed Wytholmroyd), which seems to be the probable birthplace intended for Francis in census 1851, it certainly looks like Mytholmroyd on the census image itself.

Sarah Steel nee Robinson was supposedly aged 34 when she died in 1842, and had married John in 1828. census 1841 says she was born in Yorkshire and gives her age as 30, which fits with the practice in the 1841 census of rounding down the age of over 15s to the nearest five years.

Marriage took place at Addingham, and in census 1851 two of the older children Thomas and William are born Addingham; John 1842 and older sister Jane are both recorded as born Bingley as are the two younger chidrenwho are Grace's offspring.

Unfortunately the only Sarah with a brother named Francis I've found so far seems quite a few years too old.....

Aah now you have brought forward a further connection that I have viz the Bagshaws.Yes I have my gg grandmother Sarah Bagshaw b 1820 died 1902 in Ashburton,New Zealand married to Samuel Conyer and parents of Ellen Conyer.
So thanks to your kind time and sharing we seem to have all the links to the Steels/Robinsons and Bagshaws.
I sincerely appreciate your help and info supplied.

Kucinta Report 10 May 2014 02:35

I think that possible marriage for Francis Robinson and Amelia Bagshaw/Bayshaw reasonably likely

This death occurs after the birth of Amelia's children, so might account for her widowhood by 1861, but of course no age is given in the BMD index, so hard to tell if it 'fits'

Deaths Sep 1858 Robinson Francis Bradford Yk 9b 34

Sarah Steel nee Robinson was the mother of John Steel 1842, it seems likely to me that she is Amelia Robinson's sister in law.

If I'm right, we need to find a Sarah Robinson and a Francis Robinson born to the same set of parents, or at least, to the same father if he was married more than once.

milton

milton Report 10 May 2014 02:20

Yes,the last reply summary seems logical ie connection between John Steel/Ellen Conyer and the Robinsons especially as approx. date of birth for Ellen concurs with what I already had and Johns occupation at time.
Perhaps I should start investigating Amelia Robinson to find specific relationship with the Steels?

Thanks for info on what seems a common name (John Steel) in a small area making it confusing to unthread.
Cheers
Milton

Re the connection between John Steel 1842 and wife Ellen Conyer.

I believe that John Steel's first wife Sarah Robinson was related to Francis Robinson ( possibly sister, but it's too late at night to pursue that further now), a possible husband for Amelia from census 1861 , who I suspect was nee Bagshaw or Bayshaw:

Marriages Mar 1852
Bagshaw Amelia Bradford 9b 230<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Hill Mary Bradford 9b 230
Holmes Henry Bradford 9b 230
Robinson Francis Bradford 9b 230<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Ellen's baptism:

West Yorkshire, England, Births and Baptisms, 1813-1910

Name: Ellen Conyer
Birth Date: 23 Feb 1846
Parish: Batley, All Saints
Baptism Date: 5 Apr 1846
Father's Name: Samuel Conyer<<<<<<<<<<
Mother's name: Sarah Conyer<<<<<<<<<<

Ellen's parents' marriage:

Name: Samuel Conyer<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
Age: Full Age
Marriage or Bann Date: 22 Sep 1844
Parish: Dewsbury, All Saints
Father's Name: William Conyer
Spouse's Name: Sarah Bayshaw<<<<<<<<<<
Spouse's Father's Name: John Bayshaw<<<<<<<<<<<

So if I'm right, Ellen's maternal Aunt Amelia was the wife/widow of John's maternal Uncle Francis.

Looks like the widowed John Steel, wool comber may have married Grace in 1845, which tallies with the gap in age between John Steel born 1842, and next sibling Richard born c1847 according to the 1851 census I posted earlier.

Name: John Steel
Date of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar 1845
Registration district: Keighley
Inferred County: Yorkshire West Riding
Volume Number: 23
Page Number: 266

Records on Page:
Name
James Cockin
John Bottomley
Edward Carr
Mary Meaids
Martha Moulding
Grace Shuttleworth<<<<<<<<<<<<
Sarah Smith
John Steel<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

However I can find no evidence for this John being a maltster. In 1861 he was still a wool comber, in 1871 an ag lab, and in 1881 as below:

1881 England Census about John Steel
Name: John Steel
Age: 80
Estimated birth year: abt 1801
Relationship to Head: Head
Spouse: Grace Steel
Gender: Male
Where born: Addingham, Yorkshire, England

The presence of Abraham Shuttleworth supports the probability that John Steel married Grace Shuttleworth in that 1845 marriage
