Please could someone see if they can find her on the 1881 or 1891 census. She married 26/11/1894 to a Walter Grey. I am trying to find out a bit about her family. Her marriage cert doesnt give her fathers name, so was he dead or was she illigitimate

Thank you for your help

That one in 1881 with Thomas is looking good. It would possibly agree with the baptism record in FreeReg that i have just found. Although it had her mother as Mary. They have her as being born in Wyberton. I suppose Phebe could be a second marriage???

Thanks for your help Jane

The first one Margee posted is still with her Grandma in 1891.

If your Gertrude didn't name a father on her marriage, isn't more likely that she didn't know her father?

If a father's identity is known, it will be on his child's marriage cert, whether or not he is dead, so the assumption must be that she was illegitimate

What does the 1901 census give for her birthplace?

Who witnessed her marriage?

How old was she?

And what was her address?

EDIT:

Just noticed that she didn't live long enough to be on 1901 census

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 10 Apr 2014 13:05

The inclusion of Elizabeth in her name when she married (you forgot to tell us that) would seem to suggest that the 'granddaughter' in the census records is the right girl

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 10 Apr 2014 13:10

As she was recorded as being 28 when she died in the first qtr of 1900, her birth must have been before 31st March 1872

The one whose father was Thomas was born later than that

Hi Reggie

Thanks for your help

Gertrude was 22 at time of marriage 1894. The witnesses were It looks like Frederick Drewry Snell and Fanny Furniss. it only gives her address as Glanford Grigg. He was in Raith cum Maltby

Pretty conclusive then.........

In 1891, the illegitimate Gertrude was living with her grandmother in Brigg.

The other family were in Sleaford district.............. at the other end of the County.

Check any road map for info

This is the only one on FreeBMD that could be her:

Births Sep 1872 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bacon Gertrude Boston 7a 383

Boston district covers Wyberton where it says the one with parents Thomas & Phoebe was born.

I can't help you with census info.............sorry

I don't live in the area, either...............I keep a UK road atlas on my desk

If Gertrude had known her father, he would have been named on her marriage cert..................
