Just a thought.....

"1925 - age 65
In 1925 a new kind of pension was introduced based on contributions paid at work by employer and employee. It was paid from age 65 without a means-test. A married couple's rate of pension was paid if both spouses were aged 65 or more. That meant many men had to wait for some time after they reached 65 to get the higher rate for their wives."

Just wondering whether they might have needed some evidence of a marriage in order to claim for a wife...

Might be a total red herring.

Porkie_Pie

Porkie_Pie Report 20 Mar 2014 16:32

Some people married later in life because of inheritance laws and the possible implications that involved,

Back then women did not have the equality they have today and even being a common law spouse today can cause problems

Good point Kucinta.

Kucinta Report 20 Mar 2014 16:23

Well, like I said, my relatives had no obvious impediment to their marriage, apart from perhaps poverty, yet waited until most of their children were adults before tying the knot.

It's amazing how many 'irregular' things did go on in those times...

If they were passing themselves off as married, who would gainsay them?

Val23 Report 20 Mar 2014 16:16

Thankyou Mike and Kucinta, that is the marriage that i have found.

It does seem strange to wait all that time if it is them, but i cannot find any other record for a marriage, unless of course they didn't bother getting married, which again for those times wouldnt be a regular thing i dont think.

Kucinta

Kucinta Report 20 Mar 2014 16:05

Is this the marriage you mean, Valerie? It might well be their's. People often claimed to be married in the census when they weren't.

One of my C19th relatives didn't marry his partner until after they'd been together 30 plus years and had several children together, yet both were single, so there was no impediment to the marriage She did use his name and claim to be his wife on the census from the start of their relationship, even though it took them so long to get things 'rubber stamped' as it were..
