Team. I cant locate William Caldwell after the 1891 census...
I have looked for marriages and I think he married in Sept 1899 to either
Jane Ann Nelson or Rebecca Parker in South Shields. I have checked 1901 and 1911 census using both names of the girls but are having no luck.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks Kim

Kim, there would appear to be 4 children named to the couple, but only 3 admitted to on the 1911 census. Elizabeth would appear to be registered as a Caldwell from bmd's - Mar Qtr 1897 Gateshead 10A 937 (so a bit close for an October 1896 marriage). Perhaps they couldn't add up or just forgot Elizabeth as she wasn't in the house!!

1901 gives the following
Elizabeth 1897 (Mar Qtr 1897)
William 1899 (Jun Qtr 1898)
James 1901 (Dec Qtr 1900)

1911 gives
William 1898
James 1900
Kathleen 1907 (?? Kate Elizabeth Mar Qtr 1907 - died Gateshead 1986 b 6.1.1907)
and Elizabeth elsewhere as per my 1911 post

which makes 4 children shown between both census but only 3 born to marriage on 1911 census as written on census form. ?????

Kim Annette Report 23 Feb 2014 08:15

Thanks Stuart... maybe the question of how many children was asked in an unusual way and they didn't understand it....

They were both 19 when married so maybe HAD to get married really quickly...

Flip Report 23 Feb 2014 09:12

Only 2 dependant children by the time he enlisted. Confirms wife, they married 3/10/1896. Children James dob 28/10/1900, and Kathleen 6/1/? (can't read the image).

Isabella named as nok. address 1 Back Reddell Street, Gateshead. He may not have been down the pub in 1901 - had served 2 years 4 months in Africa at some point - down as prior service, but no other details.

Estimated birth year:abt 1877
Age at enlistment:37
Birth Parish:Gateshead
Birth County:Durham
Document Year:1914

Added - possibly served in Boer War 1899-1902 which would explain his absence in 1901.

William Caldwell age 24 years 1 month attested (signed on) to Imperial Yeomanry on 12th February 1901 at Newcastle-on-Tyne. His address at the time was Mansfield Street, Gateshead ( see family address 1901 census) and he says that he has resided out of his fathers house for over 3 years. Given the Service Number 29524. Can't read what his civilian trade is.

He is 5 feet 3 3/4 " tall and weighs 137 lbs, chest measures 371/2 ". Dark complexion, Grey eyes and Dark hair. He has vaccination marks and I presume tattoos - Friendship on Left arm. Faith Hope and Charity. Cross flags on Right arm and full name on Right hand. He is a Roman Catholic.

It is noted that he wishes to join the North Durham Company.

He joined as a Private and was discharged as a Private on 15th Sept. 1902. He agreed to allow his wife 3shillings and 6d a day!!!

He was serving at "Home" ie England 12.2.01 - 14.3.01 and then South Africa 15.3.01 - 8.9.02 and then home 9.9.02 -15.9.02 and discharge. Granted Queens South African Medal for service in SA 1901 and 1902

Wife noted as Isabella Caldwell of 93 Mansfield St, Gateshead. MArried 3.10.96 at Trinity Church, Gateshead, witnesses Elizabeth Ramsay and Thomas ?Troy

Children listed as Elizabeth b 3.4.98 Gateshead and William b 29.4.99 Gateshead, both baptised at Trinity Church.

(???? these would seem to be a year later than GRO suggests with no mention of James b 1900!)

Discharged from 5th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry 100th Company 15.9.1903 at Aldershot. Age 25 years 8 months, now only 5feet 3", chest same, same address as on attestation. Still can't read his trade - Ah, clearer down page - Cartman which would be same as per attestation.

:-D :-D

Incidently, he was shot in the right leg - but there's no mention of a pension so I assume it wasn't too bad! He was Roman Catholic, 5ft 4in, 137 lbs, and fresh complexion brown eyes & hair.

I can't find a record of his earlier service though (on ancestry), maybe someone can find it on FMP, but to have served in Africa for over 2 years I would suspect the Boer War, the WW1 record does however state he served as a trooper with the 5th Imperial Yeomanry - but I'm not very clued up on military history.

ADDED: Sorry, but I see Stuart has already found the earlier service whilst I was checking and typing this!
