Further to above- We do indeed have the correct Jane Jamieson.. Bayanne site shows Jane Irvine Jamieson born Scalloway 2/9/84 - mother Ann Grant Arthur - 5 siblings-of the 5 she and a brother show no known deaths. In 1901 I have a Jane Jamieson as a housemaid working alongside my paternal GRANDMOTHER Wilhelmina Shearer (Cook) (also from Shetland)at 66, Laverock Bank Road ,Leith Edinburgh. Wilhelmina and Matthew Ewart (David's brother)(married 2/6/1905 in Temple,Midlothian. I would think that Jane would have met David at sometime before he left for Australia given the foregoing circumstance. I have a feeling that she actually went to Australia to marry him (a bit romantic!!) Give that- there is a record of a Janie Jamieson (domestic) leaving London on 11/5/11 on the Orsova bound for Melbourne - Steerage Class. - then a marriage in Victoria in 1911. It all fits in well. PS the www.bayanne.info/Shetland is excellent for finding out about anyone who has been born there or married into a shetland family. If anyone does not know about the site I hope this info is usefull
Thanks to all who have helped

Thanks for the above. Will look on the bayanne - shetland heritage site. They have a very accurate heritage base. Even found my grandfather there in a few minutes as he was married to a Shearer. It took me ages through the normal channels

Thinking Annie Isobel is named after their mothers??? Couldn't see any others with them, however that doesn't mean there wasn't more children.

Further to last post. Have now checked all the info to what I have and agree fully with AG and now agree that he went to Australia and probably died in 1952. With regard to the scored out name that you mention a similar thing happened at the marriage on 7/10/1869. It looks as if Murray has been written then scored out and James written on top. I then noticed that the witness was Thomas MURRAY!!! It looks as if that was the confusion. Funny that it happened again later!!!
Having accepted that David went to Australia one now wonders "are there any relatives out there??"
Many thanks to you all. It has settled something that has been bugging me for ages. :-)

Many thanks to all who have responded to date. I am trying to match the information etc to what I already have.Am working on my laptop at present and will print all the information off when I am back on my desktop. It will make make things easier to do. For information my Grandfather was Matthew 1878. With the information so far it looks that the information showing a death in Australia in 1952 is the most plausable (thanks AG!!) I had previously looked at the travel results but dismissed them as unsuitable because of the fact that they happened a lot later than the time I was looking at and age involved. I do ask where he was in 1901!!. I have tried everything that I can think of to solve that.!! Is it possible that he went to the USA then from there to Australia?? If he was in Australia it could explain my memories as a child of parcels from Australia with food etc. They stopped in the eary 50's

The 1900 record of a David Ewart going to USA has his occupation as "vanman". Brian's David is a farm labourer / shepherd, which fits with the Australian one.
Brian - what are your thoughts on all this?

Sorry, Chris, that's not James going to Australia. (Unless he came back again very quickly!)
He's still in Scotland in 1911. Census:
Living in Temple, Midlothian. Isabella Ewart, head, 62, widow, born Hoddom, Dumfries. James Ewart, son, 25, lime kiln labourer, born Temple, Midlothian
He married in 1912, by which time he was a railway guard (don't blame him - working as a lime kiln labourer couldn't have been much fun): 1912 EWART JAMES NEILL ELIZABETH AITKEN BORTHWICK /MIDLOTHIAN 674/00 0003
(Usual residence Temple; father James Ewart, shepherd, deceased; mother Isabella nee Moffat.)

Following that up, Chris - James junior was still in Scotland in 1901, but don't see him in 1911, so the above emigration could be a possibility. [EDIT: No, see next post re 1911]

No, I knew was right about the James / Isabella marriage.
James's mother was Mary Boyes, according to his marriage cert.
This is the only marriage for a Mary Boyes in Dumfries-shire 1841 -51:
17/01/1845 BOYES MARY DAVID EWART/FR93 (FR93) F TUNDERGARTH /DUMFRIES 851/00 0020 0061
So my theory re David's death in Australia stands.

EDIT: Looks like another good theory bites the dust (below)! Having looked at the image of the marriage record of James & Isabella below, I see it's the wrong marriage. James's father is David per the censuses, but the father of the one who married Isabella Moffatt is James. It did seem like a good bet, though, in my defence - it's the only marriage between a James Ewart (and he's a shepherd) and an Isabella of any surname in the whole of Scotland 1861-1877 (per ScotlandsPeople). Could if be that the registrar got his father's name wrong? He had made a mistake with James's name - something unreadable has been scored out, and James written in on top. Mother's name is Mary, which is correct, though very common. *********** David's parents married between 1861 and 1871 - per the 1871 census above.
David's mother Isabella was born in the Annan area (Hoddom per 1891 census; Middlebie per 1881; Dornock - mistranscribed as Deviock - in 1871, all parishes in Annan area, as is Canonbie)
This looks like his mother's birth, which fits the YOB in 1881 & 1891 census above:
27/06/1847 MOFFAT ISABELLA HARDIE JOHN MOFFAT/MARY BURNIE FR594 (FR594) F ANNAN /DUMFRIES 812/00 0020 0339
This would be her marriage: 1869 EWART JAMES MOFFAT ISABELLA CANONBIE /DUMFRIES 814/00 0009
In which case, this could be David's death:
Australia Death Index, 1787-1985 about David Ewart Name: David Ewart Death Place: Fitzroy, Victoria Age: 76 Father's Name: James Mother's name: Isbla Moffit Registration Year: 1952 Registration Place: Victoria Registration Number: 2486 Estimated birth year: abt 1876.
