Hi Thank you for your reply,
The lady in question is Maud Cecilia Dabin. BN 1878?? married in 1899 to a Arthur Cutler, died in 929 in Barking Essex. The stumbling block is that we cannot find her birth details, according to her marraige certificate she was born in Bristol her father is named and was deceased on her marraige. We also have certificates for her death in 1929 and have visited her grave in Barking Essex. She had 9 living children from 1900 to 1920. Her only daughter who is still living and is aged 98 yrs only knew her as Maud. The only birth for a Dabin born around 1878 that we can find is a Susan Jane born in Bristol. So could she have changed her name before her marraige. She was living away from family in Barking Essex at the time of her marraige, we dont know wether the address on the marraige certificate was a workhouse or a private property. We know she had a sister called Alice who married a Mullholland according to her daughter. Any help would be appreciated as we have been searching for over 6 years and keep coming back to this. :-)

Unless records can be found to match those details, it might be necessary to purchase the Susan Jane Dabin BC for elimination purposes if nothing else

Hi all,
As we cant find her birth we cannot find out her mothers name???
If she is the Susan born in Bristol we have her birth certificate and the fathers name matches with her marraige certificate his name is Thomas. His profession stated on the marraige certificate is of a Lighterman we have checked this out and there is no record of him being listed as one you needed to be registered for this profession, so we think this was made up,
We still think she changed her name for whatever reason ??? :-0

Who is the Susan Jane's mother? If we can trace her through, at least we can eliminate that birth. Sometimes people will 'big up' their occupations!

Chloe,

The more information that is found leads me to think that you are most probably correct in your assumption that Susan Jane and Maud Cecilia are one and the same person. Why she is likely to have changed her forenames is unknown but she was certainly not the first or only person to have done that. As I am sure that you are well aware anyone can call themselves by any name they choose providing that the change is not for fraudulent purposes.

Re your 20 Feb 2014 10:50
"her mother is Izalia Dabin formally Phipps"

As Izalia is such an unusual name, it does look as if other members have found the family on census for you + her parents marriage

As for changing names, as Jonesey and others have said, it’s not uncommon. One of ours born as Ellen Esther in 1904 but wanted to be known as Beryl before she married. If it weren't for family knowledge, we’d never have found her!
