It's a possibility Jan, I did search the CWGC for him but Nothing found for him, and Witney is not a common name so he should be easy to find,

There is only 4 medal cards listed on the national archives web site for a John Witney and 3 of them have a middle name so it is possible that the 4th is the John Witney in question

??
Medal card of Witney, John. Corps Regiment No Rank Hertfordshire Regiment 9728 Private. Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment 269734 Private.

Message from Barbara,

Yes this is the Claude A Witney - we have no further details after he left the school he attended in the early 1920's. Apparently his parents John and Emily split up and we have no further trace of him. His father, John Witney was my uncle, who died in 1959.

I have asked Barbara to add all replys to her thread

Hi Astra, just deleted the Claude Archibald bit as I realised it was the wrong year for his birth. <3

Gaynor Report 8 Feb 2014 19:28

Hi - looks like there is a registration for a Claude a Chapman - Oct 1913 which is the same month as John and Emily married. so very possibly Claude used both his mothers maiden name ( his birth name) and his fathers name, There is a Claude A Chapman on the 1947 Electrol role in Depford married to an Annie Chapman. Was your uncle John known as Jack and remarried a Annie Downing as there are a few trees around with this connection ( but some have their marriage the same as Annie's)
