Just to clarify, the document that Dawn has isn't a short birth certificate which would look like this:
http://www.official-deedpolls.co.uk/blog/tag/birth-certificate/

What she has is a Certificate of Registry of birth which looks like this:
http://www.flickriver.com/photos/crabchick/tags/old/

(These aren't Dawn's documents, they're just images I found and am using for illustration. I've posted a link to Dawn's certificate earlier).

The only way to confirm the mother's maiden name, etc. in this case is to order a copy of the full birth certificate from GRO.

From wikipedia:

'In addition, one can obtain a "short" birth certificate, which is an abstract of the original entry and only includes the surname, forename(s), date of birth, sex, registration district and sub-district in which the birth took place. No fee is chargeable for this when issued at the time of registration and these are commonly found among personal documents inherited from older relatives whose parents might have had no practical need for a full extract; short extracts issued after the original registration was made are subject to a prescribed fee. These extracts nowadays have little practical usability due to the reduced information shown, in the past often being used to avoid revealing the marital status of the parents or as a cheaper written statement of somebody's birth date and place when a recipient did not need the amount of corrobarative detail which is now often required due to e.g. occurrences of identity theft.'

Thanks MarieCeleste for posting the link on my behalf.

I wonder if this is an old "short" birth cert. which I believe was free!

Now received a copy of the document from Dawn which I've converted and put in my Keepsafe, not sure if a direct link will work but here goes:

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/keepsafe/asset/details/5882526

If it doesn't work then search "Member Photos and Documents" for a document called birthregistry.

Looking at the document I *think* it was a document that proved the birth had been registered rather than being the actual certificate but would be interesting to see what others think.

Dawn, you could put a copy of the scan in your Keepsafe on here and make that image public. All you need to do then is give us the name of the document and we'd be able to view it.

Alternately, you can click on my name to send a pm and attach the scan to the message and I'll take a look.

Thank you for the info, I think it would be best if I ordered a copy of the birth certificate.

I a coy of the document on my profile picture, but think it may be too small to see.

Are you 100% sure that the certificate is a birth cert issued by the registry office or is it a parish record? of baptism, Baptism records didn't give mothers name although some did give a mothers forename

The full birth info will be on that copy issued by the registry office (details below) and can be obtained from the GRO using the info below and costs £9.25 including postage

Oh wow, thanks to all, this would have taken me months to find.

Is there a way one can attach a document, I have scanned the birth certificate. There is definately no mothers onfo, so not sure why it would be different to the "normal" issue.

Hello Dawn, is the birth certificate a full certificate as shown on the image on this link (you may need to click on the image to enlarge it)?

http://genealogyresearchassistance1.blogspot.co.uk/2013/03/please-note-that-all-extracts-included.html

If so, is the column headed Name, Surname and Maiden Name of Mother completely blank?

Mike * Report 2 Feb 2014 19:00

Maybe Ellen was actually Helen

Never heard of a birth certificate without the mother's name

Thank you Mark, this sounds right, I will look into it.

I found the birth certificate amongst my grandfathers papers, it defnately does not have the mothers name, it only says "daughter of William Arthur Walker"

I would really like to find out more about her mothers side of the family
