Does anyone out there have access to Abergavenny baptism records that would be willing to do a look up ? The father of James was Charles Davies an Independant Minister mother not known. Any help with this brick wall would be appreciated. grannyjoan
My thanks to the kind people who responded to my request. I have to close this thread for the time being . Due to unforseen circumstances I shall be away for awhile. grannyjoan

Where did you find the info about his father? And about the birthplace?
Is either of these relevant?

James LLoyd Davies Methodist Minister born 1840 Abergavenny.married Eliza Pincott 1863. Father Charles
I have the 1871 census for Southport showing James his wife Eliza son Charles 4 born Cardiff and daughter Winifred Maud 2 born Weston. the next child Bertie was born 1873 Everton. The census describes James as an author of school books. His marriage certificate states he was a school teacher. I am inclined to doubt the family story that he was a Methodist Minister. The marriage certificate also states the father Charles was an Independant Minister. James and Eliza had 13 children 12 boys and 1 girl. 10 of the boys died in Everton during a diptheria epidemic I have no names. What I need is the birth of James. I did find a James Lloyd Davies born Abergavenny 1840 but he was the wrong one. Any advice would be appreciated. Joan

The census says he was born in Gloucestershire, so why have we been asked to look for info in Abergavenny?
Especially as the Abergavenny info has been discounted on another site?

Thank you for your interest. I have found four birth records a for James Lloyd registered Abergavenny all registered 1840 non fitted the information that I have. I have his marriage certificate dated 27 July 1863. He married Eliza Pincott at Brompton Midx. James was a schoolmaster and his father Charles Davies an Independant Minister, James and Eliza had thirteen children, ten died in infancy during a diptheria epidemic in Bristol. After James died about 1875 his wife Eliza somtimes known as Lilian married Charles A Chanter a botanist and went to America, I have the 1871 census for Southport showing James as ' Author of School Books born Gloucestershire but the family stories say Abergavenny! thay also say he could be 'a bit loose with the truth' I am inclined to think he was registered not born at Abergavenny. Meanwhile I keep an open mind. Joan

13 children in under 12 years?
I know it's possible, but................
Also, you refer to two diphtheria epidemics.........one in Bristol, and one in Everton

But if John died in 1875 and she remarried to Charles Chanter and went to America in 1882 using the name Lily (why) and changing her age none of it makes any sense. I can't fit 10-11 children in 4 years even if she had twins and triplets!

Sorry I thought I had replied to your message but apparantly I did not send it. I must admit to being slightly confused with this site. With regard to your last message that is the correct marriage for James I have the certificate. I feel that the Newent birth is a possible contender.I have a note of the civil bmd records but that does not show parents. with the info you have found I am tempted to send for a copy certificate thank you very much Joan
Hi Joan
I think that is a good idea re the birth certificate
Come back and let us know what it says, when it arrives
