I'm wondering if David Elcoat learned tailoring while he was in the workhouse. Can't think how else he would have got the skills cos they seem a pretty poor family |

When boys ended up in the workhouse they were quite often "apprenticed" out to craftsmen who were looking for help. Some would have been genuine but some were unfortunately just looking for cheap labour, but learning a skill was a really good way of making something of yourself so David was probably very lucky. |
