It would be unusual at his age ... but he might have been in the Anglo-Boer War in 1901.

A twig on my tree who was born abt 1858 was in the Imperial Yeomanry in that war, although he had remained a captain of reserve after his earlier spell in the military.

and FMP lists others who were in regular regiments rather than the IY

but unfortunately not even birthdates are given so it would be a matter of viewing the records

why not just leave that 'answered' button alone ??
