Hi, Thank you so much, was hoping it was the Edward in my family. Address and widow confirms it. Just wished I could find his birth somewhere, so frustrating!

Thanks again,
Rose

You do realise he was married twice?

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 19 Jan 2014 20:35

As civil registration for births wasn't compulsory until 1873-ish, his parents might not have bothered.

Try looking for a baptism - some entries have the dob noted

LadyKira Report 19 Jan 2014 21:30

I tried that Det as he was born in Stockwell Surrey and his fathers name was John.
I looked on London baptisms and Surrey baptisms.
His first wife was Rebecca Whiffen.
If you do not have this Rose I can post it for you.

Yes u are correct Mo. This a different Edwar.d. I was given this info by a member on here but when I was authenticating it found he was not my family. Process of elimination can take a long time but worth the struggle.
Thank you

If the Edward who died in 1871 is definitely your chap then we can always work back and see where we end up.

You probably already have this 1871 census but it's for our reference:

MARKS, Edward Head M 71 1800 Surrey, Stockwell - a Roadsman
MARKS, Hannah Wife F 63 1808 Oxfordshire, Oxford

Surprisingly for that era he seems to have lived at the same address for many years. Don't know what's going on with his age in 1861:

MARKS, Edwd Head Married M 50 1811 Labourer Lambeth, Surrey
MARKS, Ann Wife Married F 53 1808 Oxfordshire

I think this is Sophia's baptism:

London, England, Births and Baptisms, 1813-1906
Name: Henrietta Sophia Marks
Record Type: Baptism
Baptism Date: 27 Nov 1836
Father's Name: Edward Marks - labourer
Mother's Name: Emma Marks
Parish or Poor Law Union: Brixton St Matthew
Borough: Lambeth
Register Type: Parish Registers

Abode Stockwell.

Although there's an additional forename on this and her 1855 marriage I think it's the right one. The child named Emma on the 1841 must be named for the mother.

MarieCeleste Report 20 Jan 2014 11:18

I've got no idea if this is in the right area:

London, England, Marriages and Banns, 1754-1921

Name: Edward Marks
Spouse Name: Emma Allcock
Record Type: Marriage
Event Date: 24 Nov 1835
Parish: Newington St Mary

Register Type: Parish Register

Both widowed, witnesses George Ginn and Priscilla Ginn.

spot on everybody, thank you.

When so called Elisha died.....Elizabeth Marks 7/12/1856, 27 Robert Street Brixton
apparently born abt 1783 Reigate Surrey so no hope of finding her!

I think Emma Marks may be the girls mother, she died of fever on the brain, aged 26 4/10/1837, Hope Place, Lambeth. informant was Ann Thomas, have no idea if she was a nurse or neighbour.. I dont know if Hope Place was near Robert Street where they all landed up living?

Thank you
Rose
