Thank you for looking and for the information on Rosina/John and William/Henry . I have seen that Ancestry tree with George dying in 1929 (in Stepney), where I would expect it and Harriett in 1955. As you say only the death indexes to support it but the age all seems to fit.

There is a tree on Ancestry that has Harriet dying in 1955 and George in 1929. There is only the death indexes to support this. There are photos of William Henry (Henry) and his wife and children.

Still nothing positive on Harriet's death

After that 'a' Rosina Grout is in Battersea but she is with William John Grout ....

Not sure about Rosina and Edgar - but did find a death for a Rosina Grout in Worksop (?) in 1966 and I think it might be her but no Edgar J! George's death is registered in June 1929 - pretty sure it is him so not rushing to get his death cert.

Daughter Rosina and her husband Edgar J Grout were living with her for several years and so I have been trying to track them in case they all moved on to somewhere else but stayed together. So far no luck. George was still living in there in 1929 but I don't know what date the electoral roll was taken

That is useful to know, thank you. I have a note that her husband died c1929, so a bit surprised she is still there in 1939 (don't know why I am surprised though).

EDIT: Just had a quick look at some maps - Taylor's Place (was near to Carr Street) would certainly put her close enough to where the Bow Road/Mile End memory places her, if a little bit further over.

Shirley~

That is a good point, anything is possible. I think the only way I am going to know for sure is to try for the Death Cert and see what appears on it. I keep coming back to this one, so perhaps it is time to take the plunge.

Don't forget a death is reg in the area of death which may not necessarily be the usual home address

For instance my step grand father lived in Charlton se London (coincidence to your enquiry ) he died in 1940 in Edmonton reg district Middlesex because he had been transferred to Enfield hospital from the local Greenwich hospital

Thank you for looking but no, not mine. My Harriett was born in 1868 and married George John - she is in 12 Taylors Place in Limehouse in 1911 - think I may need to go back to the Census for 1911 and Marriage records of her siblings and children and see if any of them moved towards Surrey.

I agree - they could get the 108 bus through the Blackwall to Abbey Wood (have a feeling it might have been that number for a while) - which is what I suspect the Frenchs did but not sure why Harriett would have gone to Surrey N. Frenchs moved about the end of 1956 (per London Gazette)

My current theory is that following the Blitz, Harriett may have had little option and gone (been moved) towards Surrey. I will try to see if any of her siblings moved that way - as her children do not appear to have done so, or that I have established so far

Remember that Plumstead (which is included in the Woolwich SE18 postcode these days) is very close to the Woolwich Ferry and a foot tunnel which run from South London to E. London. So if they had family there it would be very easy for them to visit.

Difficult to answer 'when was she last seen alive' ! I tried some ER searches (struggle with those for some reason), will have another try before I order the death cert.

I have two people who 'remember' a certain grandmother/great grandmother - last seen in a house, in a street, somewhere off the Mile End Road (between Bow Road Station and Mile end Station where they used to visit - bizarre basis for a search I know) - but as that was one of the 'mystery' questions to answer I am now seriously on the trail (again).

If I could find an earlier death (after early 1930s), in Poplar or Newham (or even Greenwich) I would have gone for that. But this 1955 one seems the best fit (correct first name, YOB). Will probably get the Death Cert and find the informant was a stranger and I still won't be sure!

The C&P for George didn't pick up his DOD - date of death 24 December 1976

As regards Harriett Tucker, when was she last known to be alive? Have you found her on any of the on-line ER which Ancestry hold? We probably all have relatives who seem to have disappeared. There must be a black hole which eats records sent from the local Register Office to the GRO ;-)

Thank you for those - definitely a couple (GGrandparents). Lily died in Plumstead - he moved back to Bethnal Green (not sure how long after) and died in December 1976 - will look at the link and the images.

EDIT: Just seen the link for the link for the Surry N Reg. I did look at that before and this is why I just feel 'odd' about the death in that area - can't work out why (with absolutely no evidence of anything anyway) she would be there. As far as I can see most ancestor migration was towards Essex or Kent.

Looks like the Death Cert is definitely required.

Not seeing a Probate entry for Harriett d 1954/55 in the right area.

When calculating her month of death, you do have to consider that she could have died at the end of December, with the death registered in Jan 1955

Areas covered by Surrey N reg district can be found here

Another elusive one!

I can't see anything but wondered if there is a probate (or anything) for this person:

Harriett Tucker (mother of Lily above) - as far as I can see she should be the one who died in 1955

Deaths Mar 1955 (>99%)
TUCKER Harriett 86 Surrey N. 5g 497

Everything seems to point to this being her (born August 1868) - although there are a few other 'possibles' but this seems to be the best of them. Just can't work out what she was doing in Surrey N. Reg District (if it is her). She appears in a few trees on Ancestry and one showing her death month as January 1955 - but no day of month shown (as opposed to exact DOB).

Any input appreciated

Thank you
