Hi,
I am looking into my Mother's side of the family and have been told that her father (John Cornelius White) was born 28/101923, i have found his wedding and death records, but no birth records as yet.
His father is apparently Harold born in 1882. Harold's Father was a Cornelius White, born in around 1857 to a Solomon White who was born in around 1818 and died 27/9/1899.
Unfortunately, i don't actually know where they are from, though John Cornelius was married and died in Solihull (Warwickshire) so it is reasonable to assume they would most likely be around Warwickshire, Worcestershire or Staffordshire.
I have found a few matches for Solomon, But no birth records for Cornelius or Harold or John, so i can't track back to confirm if it is the right Solomon.
Could anyone help shed some light on this murky side of the family please? :-S
thanks,
Dan

Hello Dan, welcome to the boards.
Have you actually bought John Cornelius' marriage certificate to confirm his father's name and occupation? If so, can you give us all of the details from it?
If you don't have it, I'd strongly recommend getting it so you know you're working from hard facts.

Welcome to the boards, Dan.
Where did you get the info on John's father, etc? The first thing you need to do is to get John's marriage cert, this will confirm his father's name and also give you his occupation.

Have you ruled this out as a possible birth?
England & Wales, Birth Index, 1916-2005
Name: John C White Mother's Maiden Surname: Malins Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1923 Registration District: Birmingham Inferred County: Warwickshire Volume Number: 6d Page Number: 525
BUT there are so many John C Whites born about that time it may not be him. Don't fall into the trap (as many of us do!) of believing that because someone married and died in a location that they were also born there. He may have been, but then again his family could have moved from elsewhere.

Hi,
Thanks for the quick responses, I haven't yet got the marriage certificate, i think my mom might have the original so i will see if i can make a copy of it next time i see her. The information has come from my mom, but i have no hard facts to back it up except about my Grandfather's birthdate, marriage and death.
I hadn't considered that birth record as it hadn't come up in my searches, I will keep digging and see if i can find that.
thanks again for the quick responses :)

"Harold's Father was a Cornelius White, born in around 1857"
Although Civil registration began in 1837, it wasn't compulsory to register a birth until 1873 (ish). Unless you know differently, it's possible that Cornelius wasn't registered. Even if he was, there were 6 weeks to get to the reg office - a birth mid Nov onwards might have been registered in Jan in the following year.
Prior to 1837, you are going to have to rely on Baptism and other parish records and hope not only that Solomon was but also that the records are on line.

Did John have any siblings? There are other White/Malins births in the same area. Do any of these names mean anything?

Hi,
You people are amazing! thanks!
I have now got a new line of enquiry for this family and it is looking very promising. still have a long way to go to prove these are the people i am looking for, but Solomon - Cornelius (and his various mis-spellings) to Harold (Harry) looks very likely.
Much appreciated guys :-D
