Hi,
I would like information on military records for James Groves b1891 in Union Workhouse Eastbourne.
I have the following:- Royal Sussex 3rd. Reg. No. SD/1351. Rank, Pte.
Enlistment 10/11/14 Discharge 24/9/18.
Cause of Discharge 392(XVIA)KR
Medal.
Victory Roll E/2/101 B-19 Page 4211
British do do

Action taken, List E/1690/2

Does this mean he received medals?
What was cause of discharge??
Where did he serve?

He died 1958 Pembury Hospital.
Hope you can help, he was my wifes Grandfather. His birth reg name was James Packwood Groves, father unknown, Groves was mothers surname.
Thanks

according to his medal card on Ancestry he received two medals, The Victory & British Medals, both of them are standard medals issued to all troops who served overseas at that time

Unfortunately it looks as though his service/pension records have not survived, but not unusual as only 30% survived bombing in WW2.

To find more details about him you need to see if the War diaries for the unit he served with. have survived. These are held at the National Archives.

Try this link

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/war-diaries-ww1.htm

But I have to say they are not easy to find, and not all have been made available online.

Im having 2nd thoughts about him serving overseas, from info by googling it looks as though the 3rd battalion never left the Uk they were used to garrison Newhaven.

Although I have always been under the impression that only soldiers who served overseas were awarded medals, but I maybe wrong either way
