WoodfortheTrees Report 2 Jan 2014 19:40

Hi All
I was recently given a photo that was taken for some ancestors of mine to celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 1931 and I am trying to work out who exactly is in it. The couple were William Henry Jones (b. 1861 Gloucestershire) and Emma Jones nee Edwards (b. 1859 Gloucestershire). The photo is of them surrounded by their children and grandchildren only (there were no son-in-laws or daughter-in-laws in the photo). The problem is that, not counting Henry and Emma, there are 29 people in the photo, 4 of whom are daughters, 3 of whom are sons and the rest (22) are grandchildren.

One of the sons (William Henry Jones, b. 1895 Gloucestershire) died in World War One without ever marrying or having children.

We believe that one of the sons was in America at the time of the photo with his family and that one daughter was in Canada with her family
A. Rose Amelia Mary Jones (b. 1881 Gloucestershire) - m. 1908 Harold William Stone
1. Wilfred Lyle Stone (b. 1910 British Colombia, Canada)
2. Marjorie Emma Stone (b. 1911 British Colombia, Canada)
D. Herbert Hubert Jones (b. 1888 Missouri, United States) - m. Blanche
1. Harold Jones (b. 1915 America)

Unfortunately, this only accounts for 2 of the 6 sons, which means another son was missing from the photo, which just aren't sure which one. The possibilities are
F. Raymond Sidney Jones (b. c1892 Gloucestershire) - m. 1928 Beryl M Slade
children born after photo
H. Riley Jones (b. 1897 Gloucestershire) - m. Unknown
I. Harold Jones (b. 1898 Gloucestershire) - m. 1917 Violet Mildred Stiff
1. Herbert S jones (b. 1917 Gloucestershire)
all other children all born after 1931
J. Wilfred Baden Jones (b. 1900 Gloucestershire) - m. 1928 Nellie Brown
children born after photo

This leaves the 4 other daughters, who are all definitely in the photo. They were
B. Gertrude Boucher nee Jones (b. 1884 United States) - m. 1904 Stafford Boucher
1. Wilfred Boucher (b. c1913 Gloucestershire)
2. Jean Boucher (b. c1914 Gloucestershire)
3. Doreen Boucher (b. 1915 Gloucestershire)
4. William Boucher (b. 1916 Gloucestershire)
5. Doris Boucher (b. c 1918 Gloucestershire)
C. Dora (or Nora) Edwards nee Jones (b. c1886 United States) - m. 1906 Sidney
Edwards
1. Dorothy Edwards (b. 1908 Gloucester)
2. Harold Edwards (b. 1910 Gloucester)
4. Gladys Edwards (b. 1913 Sheffield)
5. Cyril Edwards (b. 1920 Sheffield)
6. Jean Edwards (b. 1927 Sheffield)
There was another daughter (Nora M Edwards b. 1912) but she was quite
ill and died young so wasn't in the photo
E. Maud Ball nee Jones (b. 1889 Gloucestershire) - m. 1910 Harold Ball
1. Dorothy Gertrude Ball (b. 1914 Ontario, Canada) - known as Dolly
2. Harold W ball (b. c1916 Gloucestershire) - know as Sony
3. Doreen M Ball (b. 1919 Worcestershire)
4. Albert S Patrick Ball (b. 1921 Worcestershire) - known as Bert
5. Raymond Sydney Ball (b. 1924 Gloucestershire) - known as Ray
6. Thelma Louise Ball (b. 1928 Herefordshire)
7. Kathleen E Ball (b. 1930 Herefordshire) - known as Kath
K. Dorothy E M Skeldon nee Jones (b. 1901) m. 1920 Arthur P Skeldon
children all born after the date of the photo

I hope all this makes sense. Basically, I need to try and find out where the adults sons were in 1931 and try and find the missing grandchildren (depending on whether or not Herbert S Jones (Harold and Violet's son) is in the photo, I'm missing the names of 4 or 5 grandchildren). Any help tracing these relatives would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Julia

When the Ball family returned to England in Nov.1915 there were only Harry, 29, Maud, 26 and Dorothy, 6 months. What about Harold W. who was supposed to be born 1915, USA?

Edit: or was he born 1916, Tewksbury?

That's possible, people in that family were travelled back and forth from America so many times we lost track of who was where when and who was born where. Thanks for that

I don't think Percy was one of mine, but Jones is quite a common name in my area so it gets hard at times to tell who's related and who isn't. We had Dorothy and Arthur Skeldon as having a daughter Irene P Skeldon born in 1932 but we don't have any other children for them. For Harold Jones and Violet Stiff we had daughters Margery (b. c1937), Vivien (b. 1938) and Hilary (b. c1939) but that's it. Thanks for all the information so far, marriage dates makes things so much easier

WoodfortheTrees Report 3 Jan 2014 11:58

Ok, so I now have
Maud's marriage and all her children;
Dorothy's marriage and at least 1 child for her;
Gertrude's marriage and all her children;
Harold's marriage, 3 definite daughters for him and a potential son who my Gran doesn't seem to know, despite the fact that she knows the girls
Although I don't have Herbert's exact marriage date he definitely only had the one son and they were both in America at the time of the photo
I still need to find out if Rose, Dora and Riley married and had children and the marriage dates for Raymond and Wilfred Jones and whether they had kids

With the unusual middle name then I expect this is him. Wilfred died 1970 and provided that whoever registered the death had the correct details then his DOB is given

Update: I've found a potential marriage for Raymond Jones and Beryl Slade in Jun quarter 1928 in Westbury-on-Severn, Gloucestershire and a potential son born in 1932 so after the photo

Again using http://www.freebmd.org.uk/

There are any number of Jones/Brown births in Gloucestershire using 1928-1948 as parameters. The one you name was b 1939, so rather a long time after the marriage.

Do you know they stayed in Glos'shire and if so which area and did they stay there or move around within Glos, as Jones/Brown marriages are too common to be absolutely sure you have the right births.

Update: I've found more information on Rose Jones. It seems sometime after her marriage to Harold Stone, they moved to Trail, British Colombia, Canada where they had at least 2 children: Wilfred Lyle born February 1910 and Margery Emma born 01/08/1911. Both Rose and Harold died in Canada, but that doesn't mean that they didn't come back for the wedding anniversary photo. How would I find out if they had?

Given his place of death (and possibly the first wife) there is a potential marriage in 1974 in Weston Super Mare, but can't find a death for the lady so won't post as she could have been younger than him and still alive.

I had Pauline Jones (daughter of Wilfred Jones and Nellie Brown) as being born in 1939 in Upton, Worcestershire. However, this family were quite rich with businesses and relatives on both sides of the Atlantic and so a few of them seemed to travel back and forth from Canada and America quite a bit so I tend to lose track of who was where and when. Thanks for the information on Riley

WoodfortheTrees Report 3 Jan 2014 14:24

On the 1911 census there is an R Jones with the family in 36 High Street, Tewkesbury. I believe this is more likely to be Riley than his older brother Raymond due to the age and the fact that Raymond had the middle name of Sydney.

As all the daughters bar Dorothy are holding children in the photo I'm pretty sure Dora must have married and had kids, I just can't find to whom
