Thanks, all of you! So the daughter's name was Susan Edith...and I suspect that poor Francis didn't survive his illness.

I've had a look but there's nothing I can do until the beginning of Jan when the Archive re-opens.
Francis Luckford Astley shows up on the Archive catalogue as a Hospital admission, it's not a register that's been transcribed so I'll have to order it to find out why he was there. With any luck the register should also say whether he was discharged or died. As he's not shown as an inmate (Workhouse section) he was probably ill - people with TB were often sent to Jersey in the hope that the milder climate would be beneficial although this was rarely the case.

Hi Julia
There is a lovely member by the name of "JerseyLily" who does Jersey look ups.
I have sent her a PM to ask if she might be able to take a look at your thread.

I would concur with PH.....the corrected age for the child on the 1851 she posted is definitely 2 months
You have been given the likely birth/death for her...........if you wish to confirm, the cert will cost £9.25
These were the actual occupants at the time - accurately transcribed by FMP
SPANSWICK, Mary Servant Unmarried F 22 1829 Servant Pewsey, Wiltshire VIEW INGRAM, Ellen Servant Unmarried F 21 1830 Servant Salisbury, Wiltshire VIEW HUISH, James Servant Unmarried M 21 1830 Servant Manningford, Wiltshire VIEW
Perhaps Francis died at a young age - in Jersey.

Thanks, all!
I suspected that Emma Edith/Edith may have died young, but it's seems odd that Francis disappeared so completely after 1881 (assuming that he was the 'boarder' at the St Helier hospital).

Given that they married in 1850 and she died in 1854, it seems to me that they had two children - Susan Edith who died a baby and Francis who is the person found in Jersey in 1881.

Looking at the image......i would say a "2" has been enterered in the male column for "Enna" and then realising the mistake......."2 mths" has been added in the female column.

NO second name..................
Births Mar 1853 (>99%) Astley Francis Pewsey 5a 168
...although, as his father assumed a further name (for whatever reason) it is reasonable to assume that the son also used it.........
And 'Lukeford' is close enough to'Ludford' to suggest a link

Not seeing anything for an Emma Edith (although I do agree that's what is written on the 1851 census) I am sure you have seen this. It just seems so strange that there is not a birth for Emma Edith.
