I get strange messages in my inbox here ... flick the frankly felicitous ricocheting red flywheel ??? :-S

It is beyond me but supposedly this Reggie fellow will understand it.

In any event I hardly see how it is fair or appropriate to say to a new poster 'Where did you get the info?' and then keep posting in her thread simply to argue with somebody else about whatever it is that's being argued about which is also beyond me .........

I said Rootschat in general is a very good place to look for specialised information like this, and it is. :-)

Thank you for that, I had emailed a copy of the mariners ticket to a relation I had found on the internet. I had not realised that it had been put on the site, well found.

JoonieCloonie (and anyone else who may be interested) the post of 25 Apr 2013 12:37 by Genes Community Manager on the linked thread clarifies GR's position regarding the posting of information from other sites:

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards/board/tips_board/thread/1322680?page=1

Specifically "For example, if you are performing a look up for someone, and the record you have found is available on a family history site other than Genes Reunited, you are fine to reference the site where you found the record. We understand that there are other sites available and that in some instances they will have records that we don’t. We encourage our members to help others and this is one way of doing so. "

This was mainly in response to self appointed board police reporting any posts that even contained the names of sites such as Ancestry or FindMyPast.

GR's terms & conditions and also the guidelines for message board use are silent on the matter of copy and pasting transcripts and, as they are very well aware that we all do it, it has never been a problem.

You are a bit of an odd fellow, Reggie. :-)

Rootschat has a convention of saying things like Anc***^y. Rootschat is a very useful forum for specialized research especially. It frowns severely on copying and pasting from subscription sites, in fact it prohibits it. I have noticed no such rule here!

There is no embargo on the mention on here of Ancestry, or any other site - at least not nowadays - as long as GR is not shown in a poor light by comparison.

It used to be perceived that there was such a prohibition - perhaps that's what you're remembering, JC

Pauline..............

If you actually have the ticket - not sure what you're asking. Perhaps you could clarify

Hello thank you I had a look at the other post. Interesting, I wondered if it was possible to tell how long he had been at sea and where he had sailed from or if he had been at all as this one had only been folded once length wise. It was issued on 27th September 1847 but cannot read the port name but it could be Inverness.

I hope you didn't think I was questioning your link, it was a very helpful one!

Yes, Rootschat does not sell any products ... including the forums. :-)

The Anc****y convention comes from there I believe, although I have never really understood the reason, maybe except that so many comments about it are negative :-D

but also the site is wary of copyright infringements (and there is also the business about subscribers using it for personal research only) and it may be thought that the Anc****y form prevents search engines from finding it!

JoonieCloonie, the protocol on these boards is that as long as another site being mentioned is not done so to put GR in a position of being unfavourably compared then there is no problem. There have been a number of threads (particularly on Genealogy Chat board) over the years and GR have stated that there is no problem (although there are some posters who still do not feel comfortable about naming other sites and will mention, e.g. Anc***** instead of naming Ancestry)

It is perfectly acceptable to state the sources of information found when providing information.

To the best of my knowledge Rootschat is purely forum based and does not have records which require payment to view so would not be deemed a competitor.

Rootschat in general is a very good place to look for specialised information like this, and I had thought of recommending it, but I wasn't sure what the protocol here was for recommending 'competitors' :-)

What more would you want to know about the ticket Pauline, since you are lucky enough to have it?

If you do post a question at that other forum you might mention it here so others know what might be found.

Hello Pauline, are you wanting to know more about mariners tickets in general? If so, I came across a query about them on this link, don't know if it's of interest:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=584907.0

I've had a look in the Merchant Navy Seaman's list on FindMyPast but the only Samuel Cheetham I could find born around that time was from Salford.
