Hi,

I am looking for the marriage of Elizabeth Brooksbank born c1821 Holbeck, Leeds, Yorkshire to ??? Hanson.

1841 census Elizabeth Brooksbank living Victoria Road, Leeds with (illegitimate?) son John age 1.

1851 census has Elizabeth, now Hanson, in Holbeck listed as a widow and children John W (10), Sarah Ann (8) and Thomas (1) all children with surname Brooksbank.

On 18th August 1857 Elizabeth Hanson married Joseph Bartle at St Matthew, Holbeck. It appears the marriage didn't last as they are living apart in 1861, son Thomas with his mother bearing the surname Bartle.

Any help with Elizabeth's first marriage and the births of the children would be much appreciated.

Back again. Yes Gins it is confusing with all the different surnames Elizabeth used for the children.

I found what I believe to be Sarah Ann's marriage, 3rd Feb. 1867 at St Matthews, Holbeck, where she gives her father as John Brooksbank. Probably trying to save face on the record?

It looks like Elizabeth's marriage to ' ?? Hanson' will have to go on the back-burner for now.

Yes, I have a copy of that marriage to Joseph Bartle and the 1861 census but thanks for your input.

It's this elusive fellow Hanson I can't seem to find.

Thanks to you also Chris, Wortley, Upper Wortley and Holbeck are more or less side by side as areas of Leeds. I'll have a look at that family.

I had found that one and was wondering if it was their marriage. If neither could read or write they wouldn't know what had been written down if mis-heard by person recording the marriage.

I'll check for a death of John Hanson between 1844 & 1851.

The father on that marriage was Joseph Brook, Linen weaver.

Elizabeth's father was listed as Jonas, also a Linen Weaver, on the marriage to Joseph Bartle.

Seems unlikely mistakes could be made on both her marriages ??
