The occupation for John on the 1861 census posted by Alviegal is actually seaman, not carman. He is absent from the family 1851/41, but Jane is recorded as Seaman's wife.

However, something isn't adding up son John's age is wrong, although he is a seaman in 1851:

Thank you for your very quick replies I have him on some census but no wonder I could not find on 1881 census!! It is the right family .He married Agnes Ferguson from Berwick
John Millen's parents are John Millen born about 1798 Long Benton and Jane Gardiner, they were married 1823 Tynemouth Northumberland.

Hello Newdawn, who might he have been with (assuming he was still alive 1881)?

Have you found him on later census? Did he marry, and if so who was his wife - do you know if she would have been alive in 1881? If she was, have you found her?

Help required please for information on John Millen born about 1825 Tynemouth Northumberland.He was a seaman, living for a time at Berwick on Tweed I cannot find any trace of him or his family on 1881 census.Also if possible information on his Grandparents James Milen born Aberdeen and Catherine Whigham born near Hexam I belive ,birth dates are unknown.
