Hi,

I am trying to find the maiden for Annie Lousia Sylvester born 1864 (37 on 1901 cenus) She was married to John Sylvester who was a year older than her. They lived around Newport/Salop/Shropshire area and had 5 children Annie, Levi, Margaret Jane (my great Gran) James and Mary. I can't find a marriage to find out the maiden for Annie. Please can anyone help or give me a few ideas of how to find it?

Thank you everyone for looking for me. I don't think she strayed as far as America Cornwall or Scotland according to the cenus reportts for the Sylvester/ Silvester family. Why could they not have put the maiden names on the marriage details and not just on the certs! I will order the cert for one of the childen and see if it comes up, but there is the Sylvester or Silvester query too think they could have used both names. Though the cert for her daughter Maragert Jane was under Sylvester. Ah well the misery continues! But thank you for your help : )

If the maiden name of Annie turns out to be Osborne, then the info I posted was not for her but for her eventual parents and in particular her mother.
You should keep it all on file until you get the cert. Once you have it come back to this thread and post all the details so all those helping can see what it says. If the info above is not correct, then we can look again to see what we can find.

Fiona, no-one was suggesting that Annie Louisa strayed as far as America or Scotland! The suggestion was that her mothers second husband did. Also that her mother Louise was not free to marry her third husband as she was unlikely to have been divorced from Adam Addie?

When you buy the birth certificate for one of Annie's children it should give her maiden surname.

As for the spelling of Sylvester / Silvester, do remember that many were unable to read or write at that time. I remember my own grandmother telling me that when her mother received a letter telling of her daughter's death in 1911 that she was unable to read it!

Please come back and let us know when you get the child's birth certificate.
