Hi there,
My ancestor Mary Reed married in 1840 in Stockton to Arthur Magee. I have the certificate and she states her father as being Anthony Reed, a farmer. She died in 1855 but according to the 1851 census, she was born in Yarm, c. 1813.
I have looked and looked but can't find a baptism on familysearch for a Mary Reed, daughter of Anthony Reed. I can find a baptism in Yarm however for a Mary Reed, daughter of James and Mary Reed, who had a son named ANTHONY Reed.
Could this a confusion and Mary's father is actually James? Has anyone else had 'wrong' names recorded on official documents?
I can take the James Reed line back over but not sure whether to do so or not under the circumstances.
Best wishes,
Peter

A tree on Ancestry has her parents as Anthony Reed and Sarah Towers.
The only source is 'Ancestral Trees' ie someone else's research.

She could have given her brother's name, by mistake
She could also have been illegitimate, and invented a father

Hi Gins, the witnesses are John Leadbitten and Philip Barry and Mary's father, 'Anthony Reed, Farmer'.
Hmmm, so I do I go with James Reed of Yarm or Anthony Reed of Leeds?!
Ahhhhh so complicated.

Roy, no can't see a SUSPECTED Anthony Reed SNR on the 1841 census or 1851 census - can you? Is that what you mean?
And yes Shirely, I am sure the census for Anthony are for Mary's brother. However, is the baptism in 1813 in Yarm correct for her when her marriage certificate so obviously contradicts that?
What do you think? I just don't want to go down the wrong line.

No Holly, not a waste - all of my threads ask very specific questions.
Many years ago I used to one thread for the same family (i.e. looking at siblings, and even cousins etc), which the inclusion of these two threads would suggest is the best way to manage this. I was told that was the wrong way to do it, hence why since then, I have always started a new thread.
A lot of the information on these threads, although I am VERY grateful for it, does not pertain to my initial question, hence why it seems the threads are often more closely related than they actually are.
So, no, I don't think it is a waste of member's time at all.
