Hi there,

My ancestors Samuel Panton and his wife Roseanna where living in Middlesbrough, Yorkshire in the 1871 census. He was born in Dublin and I am trying to work out her birthplace ... can anyone help please?

Also, I know Irish records can be tricky but can I find out anything about their life in Ireland. I know they married in Dublin in 1847 but nothing more than this.

Thanks,

Peter

True Jan and thank you - but I can't find that place. Can anyone narrow down where that is?

Yeah it is odd - I got the same result, but surely not the same, as I do have a marriage from 1847 in Dublin ... could the word be transcribed incorrectly from the original image?

Best I can guess would be Wexford, but there doesn't seem to be anything to back this up one way or the other.

Have you not got the marriage certificate for more information?

Sylvia

There is a Milford in County Donegal but that's just a thought.

Peter Report 15 Nov 2013 23:50

Ah ok Jan, never thought of that, and no Patchem, I haven't but I know there is nothing else recorded as I did call the Archives for one but the suggested it wasn't worth the cost of printing of I had all of the informaiton already which was the date of the ceremony and the parties names only.

Any other ideas? Thanks for your help?

Would there be a christening for Roseanna in Wexford perhaps?

Peter...I assume you also have the Baptisms of William/James 1852 St Nicholas Catherine 1855...Samuel and Rosanna were living New Row (Dublin) at the time.....I dont see the boys/Cath.on the 1871 Census above.....
I would be looking at the Co Wexford for Roseanna Birth....

Samuel and Roseanna were in UK 1858....There is a Baptism for a child ..Toniea..?? 26 Dec ...Our Lady and St Joseph Broom...also Margaritae 1861...

Samuel...1861 Census... I havent full access....this should give all "living" children from date of marriage as they would probably still be at home....

Samuel Panton, "England and Wales Census, 1861"Name: Samuel Panton

Thank you Eringobragh1916, yes have William and James, and Catherine isn't on the 1871 census but working away as a servant and there was a a sister Mary born c. 1850 in Dublin and POSSIBLY a brother named Thomas, born c. 1848.

Toniea was Theresa, my ancestor.

A death for William and James would be much appreciated and I am am trying to work backwards.

According to the census Samuel Panton was born in Dublin but I can't find anything, any ideas?

Peter....Not a "Common" RC christian/ surname so shouldnt be to difficult to research....(tongue in cheek)....some on the Church website for Dublin.... I will have root around see what I can find...
Have you searched for other Panton's in the same area as Sam.and Roseanne 1858 onward.......a wider search may find others in the locality. Do you know who were Sponsors for the children Baptised in Broom...?

The 1861 census :

Address: Leadgate, Iveston County: Durham

PANTON, Samuel Head Married M 38 1823 Labourer
Ireland
PANTON, Rosane Wife F 38 1823 Wife Of Labourer
Ireland
PANTON, Thomas Son Unmarried M 13 1848 Labourer Ireland
PANTON, Mary Daughter F 11 1850 Ireland
PANTON, ... Daughter F 6 1855 Ireland
PANTON, Lorrine Daughter F 2 1859 Leadgate, Durham
KARL, James G Lodger Unmarried M 21 1840 Labourer Leadgate, Durham
NAIL, Bridget A Lodger Unmarried F 23 1838 Servant Durham
CHONE, Patrick Mc Lodger Unmarried M 30 1831 Labourer Durham

Looking at the census image, the forename untranscribed daur born Ireland c1855 might be Cate, and 'Lorrine' could be Teresa.

Peter

Peter Report 16 Nov 2013 21:56

Hi Kucinta,

Thank you, yes, that is my family and Lorrine is Theresa! And Cate is Catherine, born 1855.

And no Eringobragh, not looked into the Pantons in the area and I do have the baptism for Theresa but not currently with me and won't have access for another month or more. Ahhhh.

I do know there were Panton's in Dublin in the 1790s working as 'glovers', but that is maybe two generations before Samuel.

Any other ideas? Thank you for your help!
