Yes, exactly. Thanks. I agree, I never thought I would come across it but thanks to some trees I have viewed, we have matches that go way back and surely they ALL can't be wrong. There are probably 500 of trees online that I have matches to that relate to royalty. That is the whole point in the question, is it ask for any resources where I can clarify some information. Online is amazing for researching. As it goes further back, all I need to do is google a name and "blam", I got a lot of results. Especially, if it relates to Charlemagne, Charles Martel, Pepin, Clovis, etc etc etc..

If they have all copied each other...then yes they could all be wrong

Daniel

unfortunately, people take information from trees all the time because they "think" it matches their family, and they "think" it is accurate.

There are hundreds of trees on ancestry for example that have just copied from each other.

ONE person put the information in, someone copied form that, and on and on and on.

My advice, for what you want to make of it is ...........

........... unless a tree owner demonstrates that he/she has the documents in hand. or has seen them personally, by making notations on the tree as to the content of those documents ........ then the tree cannot be believed!

Americans in particular seem to be much addicted to wanting to connect their family to royalty, and many of them seem to copy ad infinitum without doing any checking

As Jax says above .............. YES, they COULD all be wrong!

That is true. The tree I originally found the information from does provide a source but it is hard to google it so I am stuck to finding that myself. I have noticed a lot of differences as I always compare information from trees and google search, so will have to sort all that out. I have contacted people via Geni.com so hopefully I can get something good from that.

We managed to trace my family back to 1425, but the name was spelt slightly differently and this could happen when you go back that far. Incidently, I did not do the research myself and likewise wanted to make sure of the facts before I added to my tree - we have the full tree and to be honest, it did not give as much excitement as those more recent ancestors - too distant. Not royalty, but noble.

Yes. But even in recent history, genealogy shows different name variations. That is totally natural. Especially if some were not literate.
