Find Ancestors

Hi,

I'm searching for my grandfathers family. I have a vague idea of names, dates, places etc. but I'd be extremely grateful if some kind soul would be able to confirm or refute my information!

My granddad's father is Thomas Nicholson b. 20/09/1876 in Bill Quay, Durham. He was a ships joiner. He married Margaret Annie Hall Halbert on 21/06/1905 at St Mary's Church, Heworth. His parents were John Nicholson (b.1839) and Elizabeth Scott (b.1843).

John Nicholson b. 05/08/1839 in Hepscote, Northumberland. He married Elizabeth Scott in the first quarter 1875. I believe his parents were John Nicholson (1792-1855) and Ann Orpeth (1807-).

Any information you could give me on the family would be fantastic! :-D

Have you got the certificates for those births and marriages?

That is the way to confirm or refute the information.

I have ordered the birth certificate for Thomas Nicholson and plan to work back from there. As someone relatively new to family history research, being pointed in the right direction is always useful!

Thank you Syliva, it very well could be. My information comes from my grandfather who doesn't always remember facts, like dates, very well. I will ask him if Wynn Street rings any bells tomorrow. Out of interest does this census list his parents' names? Or siblings - Thomas (born & died 1860), John, Mary Ann, Sarah Jane and Elizabeth?

Do you know for sure his father was John? On the same census page there is a John Nicholson with wife Sarah, but they are a different family.

ADDED: Think you can rule this one out, as he is still with parents in 1901 and a bricklayers labourer.

Sorry I tried to reply earlier on my phone, but didn't seem to get anywhere.

Thank you for all that information! We knew there was a Robson connection somewhere along the line - if I recall there is a Robson family bible somewhere which someone was trying to find a connection to. How would I now go about finding out further details about the family? Are there any other records that I should be looking at? How do I get access to things like census records etc. without paying the large fees for sites like Ancestry and this one? I'm not trying to be greedy but I have a young family and this is a hobby.

There are a number of sites which you can access records for free, these 2 are pretty good for parish records

https://familysearch.org/ This also has census records - but only 1881 is free to view (Findmypast also has 1881 free to view)

If you want other census records, you would either need to pay, or do what you have done and ask on the boards - there's always someone around to do lookups! Or if you are local, the local library/records office usually have copies of the local census.
