The plot thickens! I wonder what happened to Amelia's family between 1901 and 1911 - the only two members I can identify in 1911 are Amelia's half-sisters Margaret and Sarah Elizabeth, who were living in Bradford with their uncle Benjamin Baxter.

MarieCeleste Report 29 Oct 2013 21:38

Looking at the 1914 passenger list that Mike posted - that Amelia Edwards was the wife of a Fred Edwards and certainly wasn't a "Rev", that was the man on the line below but it's got muddled in transcription.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 29 Oct 2013 21:23

Julia, it's possible that Samuel wasn't her father - the column for father's name is blank on the baptism record.

Mary Jane wasn't with Samuel on the 1881 and the Keighley's address is the same one she used on Amelia's baptism.

If you bought her birth certificate then it may name him as the father because legally he was probably still Mary Jane's husband. Baptism records are sometimes more truthful than actual certificates.

ADDED: I've just realised that Matilda and Amelia's baptisms are next to each other on the register, as Choccy posted above. Samuel is named as Matilda's father but not as Amelia's. Sounds like Mary Jane was honest with the vicar.

Thanks, everyone! I was aware of Mary Jane Wray's marriage to Samuel Berry but it never occurred to me that Amelia could have been his daughter.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 29 Oct 2013 21:11

Could be her mother's first marriage:

England & Wales, FreeBMD Marriage Index, 1837-1915

Name: Mary Jane Wray
Date of Registration: Apr-May-Jun 1875
Registration District: Bradford
Inferred County: Yorkshire West Riding
Volume Number: 9b
Page Number: 346

Records on Page:
Name
Samuel Berry <<<
Ellen Leach
Joseph Lee
Robert Peel Peel
Mary Jane Wray <<<

Her maiden name is given as Wray on the Canadian marriage.

On Amelia's baptism Mary Jane is a Mill Hand of 16 Buxton Street

Her father died in 1926 - I don't know if her mother was still alive in 1911.

It occurred to me that Amelia had relatives in Philadelphia and may have gone to live with them, but I couldn't find her in the relevant American censuses either.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 29 Oct 2013 20:50

Hello Julia, welcome to the boards.

Were her parents still alive in 1911? Do you know when they married?

Julia

Julia Report 29 Oct 2013 20:42

I'd be grateful for some help in tracing the whereabouts of my great-great aunt Amelia 'Minnie' Edwards between 1882 and 1915. I was under the impression that she was born on 15/3/1882 in Bradford, Yorkshire, but I can't find any evidence for this. She appears in the census records for 1891 and 1901, living in Bradford with her parents Albert and Mary Jane Edwards, but after that I can't find anything until 1915, when she married Harold Dilke in Ontario, Canada.

Thanks!

Julia
