Can anyone help with shipping records from Scotland to Jamaica (West Indies). Robert Roy B.1789 travelled to Jamaica possibily 1808 to oversee or be a book keeper on a Sugar Plantation. I would like to know exactly when he first travelled to Jamaica. He was born in Kinloss, Moray in the North of Scotland and his parents were peter Roy and Margaret Mackie. Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you.
Patricia.

Patricia

There are several entries for a Robert Roy on Ancestry.
he appears to own a plantation and acquires people to work for him .
Alot a mackies mentioned being transported to Jamaica

They all appear to be of African descent.
This is just one entry all 1826.

Thank you Sue, Yes, I do know about the Slave Registers. Roberts Mother's Brother, William Mackie also owned Plantations over there hence the Mackie name. The slaves on the Plantations often took the surname of the owner. What I wanted to know was exactly in what year Robert left Scotland for Jamaica. Another researcher has told me that there are no Shipping Records pre 1890 so perhaps I will never know.

Thank you
Patricia.

What Reggie said was there are no pre 1890 shipping records on Find My Past (FMP) website.

I've recently been reading Tom Devine's excellent histories of Scottish emigration and there clearly are records of a sort though right now I can't say what.

If you don't get any joy here try other resources such as the National Records of Scotland.

Malcolm,
I have heard of a publication "Scots in the West Indies" and have been trying to get a copy. I will certainly try for Tom Devine"s histories and the National Records of Scotland. Thank you for your input. Much appreciated.
Kindest Regards,
Patricia.

MarieCeleste,

Thank you. I have seen this Robert Roy but I am sure he is not connected to my Robert. My Robert"s children were getting married around 1841 and he did not have a son Robert. My Robert had children with a free woman (of Colour) Cecelia Agnes Noble. They never married but all the children were registered under Robert and Cecelia"s (unmarried) names and they stayed together into old age. I do know that their only son William did go back and forth to Scotland.
Not sure if he ever eventually stayed in Scotland. I don't think Robert ever went back. Perhaps he did and that is why I am looking for shipping records. Thank you. Kind Regards, Patricia.
