Rowena, where did the information come from that he was running for Lord Mayor of London at the time of his death? Did the source give a timescale for this?

Regarding the indecent photographs, there are a few newspaper articles in 1895.

The Howard Hogben in those articles lived at 81 Peckham Road, and conducted business (as a manager, not proprietor) at 5 Railway Approach, Charing Cross.

He pleaded for mercy stating he had 3 of his 5 children at a boarding school. He also claimed to be well connected, his father being a clergyman and his brother a senior wrangler at Cambridge.

EDIT: Snap! Alviegal and I must read the same papers.

Ditto Reggie, I looked for the same on ancestry.

But then again, no sign of him going to US to obtain his dentestry diploma either!! Maybe it was "mail-order" - bit like Doctorates obtained from Berkeley University these days?

Added, but then again I'm a bit of a cynic! I interviewed a Phd student from Berkeley who claimed to be a doctor of physics, absolute B*ll s**t

Thank you so much everyone. Howard's mother's maiden name was Mary Bennett McLachlan and his father was George Hogben. It is only what happened to him after Clara died that I am stuck on. The possibility of him being a criminal is worth looking into or perhaps that he went to the USA. His Daughter Hilda is the one who is my Great Grandmother.

From his occupation, he seems to have spent time in the USA. Maybe he went back there?
