Hi Everyone
I've had a long term brickwall with my gg grandfathers sister Mary JAMES who married William HURDITCH in 1854 at St Lathans Church, Cardiff, Wales.
Mary died Sep 1874, date unknown and her newborn baby Hannah died 1 Sep 1874 so possibly same date. I've found death registrations for both Mary and Hannah in Pontypridd, Glamorgan, Wales. I also found a probate for Hannah which was granted in Somerset on 9 Feb 1875 to her father "William HURDITCH of the Parish of Winscombe" The probate says Hannah was "late of the Parish of Chew Magna in the county of Somerset". Have been unable to find a probate for Mary. William died 4 Apr 1898, death registered in Pontypridd under HURDIDGE. He was born and raised in Wrington, Somerset.
I also can't find any of the family in the 1871 census for Wales or England.....probably due to transcription errors plus the family changing spelling of surname (Hurdidge, Harditch, Hardage, Hardwick, Hurditch)
PLEASE can anyone help me solve this, really appreciate your help .
Kind Regards
Tracy New Zealand

The 1861 can not be the right family as both still alive in 1881

That probate record, shows the lady died in Somerset and links to this death:
Hannah Hurditch Estimated Birth Year: abt 1832 Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1874 Age at Death: 42 Registration District: Clutton Inferred County: Somerset Volume: 5c Page: 376
So I think you have gone wrong somewhere in the research. This lady was a spinster of Chew Magna

Coming up with nothing for them in 1871 on ancestry - tried under various wildcards. If it is the right family in 1861 maybe a search using just first names and occupation shoemaker may find them on FMP?

A huge thanks to everyone who has replied above ;-)
The 1861 Census that Flip and PricklyHolly have posted are correct :-)
And the Death Reg that PricklyHolly posted are the right ones :-)
And what a dumb mistake I made with the probate for Hannah who was a spinster :-S :-S
Any ideas on where Mary & Hannah and probably others of the same family are buried? And what spelling may have been used on the 1871 Wales Census?
Thanks Again!!
Tracy

Very frustrating because i can't find the family in 1871 on Ancestry or FMP.
Tracy.........if you go to Ancestry's sister site here.......
http://www.mundia.com/gb/
You will be able to view the tree that is on Ancestry. (You will need to register)
Tree name....Hurdidge/Docherty/Williams/Jones Tree Owner....andreajames39
There is a photo of the church, the graveyard and William's headstone which includes other members of the family.
Son John who died before his father in 1894 in the Albion Pit Disaster and Son David who died in 1932.

I've tried all types of search on ancestry, 1871/81/91 but can't locate William - even though it looks like he didn't die until 1898.
Only thing I can think of is get one of the children's birth certificates born nearest to the 1871 census for an address, or Mary's death certificate may have an address.

Thanks for that PricklyHolly
I've been in touch with Andrea in the last couple of days but she has no idea where Mary & Hannah are buried...they aren't buried with William and 2 of their sons and am waiting for a reply from her as to which cemetery they are buried at in case she is mistaken.
As you've probably noticed from the Census records William & Mary had 9 children, mainly boys so I'm very surprised there aren't other Hurdidge/Hurditch's or James' (this was Mary's maiden) buried there. My James ancestors lived all round this area and only wish I lived there so I could do a few road trips and look myself ;-)
Hope this helps
Cheers Tracy

Every bit helps Chris :-)
UPDATE
Have heard back from Andrea James and the cemetery where William and his two sons are buried had a church called St Cynons which is on a hill and was apparently demolished to make way for part of a motorway but the graves were left in place.
I just did a quick google search but as my geography of Wales isn't great I'm not sure where it is but am guessing it could be one in Rhonda or Taffs Vale as some of my James branches lived round this area for many years.
Hope this helps

Does anyone know where the Parish Records or Registers would be for St Cynon Church for c1874 when Mary and baby Hannah died?
I also thought perhaps there is a church cemetery or public cemetery in or near Treforest, Glamorgan as this was where their next youngest child Isaac was born 16 Oct 1872?
Appreciate any help you can offer.
