WOW. Thank you so much, you have both been a great help. No Edwin did not go over with his sister, he went on my wifes Grandfathers passport Lemuel William Hampson in 1920, Lemuel having died in 1917. Edwin Wood married Gertrude Hampson widow of Lemuel in 1919 Sheffield. It said on the marriage lines that he was a Secretary to a Limited Company and an Army pensioner. I have looked in the Army records and found an Edwin Wood , with a father Thomas born Salford Lancs, his occupation being a Clerk and West Africa mentioned, which will be correct that Edwin Wood did go to Africa because we have a photo of him with one of the native boys outside a hut. So yes this is the Edwin Wood. Then I found another Edwin Wood living in Burnley in 1911 and his occupation states Secretary to a Limited Company !!!! and the same age so I wonder, surely he could not have been in 2 places at once. I just wondered when he may have died in Canada. On the official document on arrival to Canada for Lemuel William Hampson he states he was going to live with his sister Mrs L Hundle in Toronto. Can any one shed any more light on this problem I have

Well you seem to confirm that the info I have found is the correct person. Sister Mrs L Hundle should be Lottie Hindle.

If you look in passenger lists you will find Lemuel William Hampson going to Philadelphia in 1901 age 18 but unable to find a passage back, ,he married Gertrude Hodgett in 1905 and died in 1917. Gertrude Hampson then married Edwin Wood in 1919. Then on the passenger list is Lemuel William Hampson again crossing to Canada.and now looking at the death you found Toronto it looks like Edwin Wood died within a few weeks after arrival and he was listed under his own name. I wonder if Grandma Gertrude Wood / Hampson ever knew that. I did write to the immigration office in Quebec a few years ago to find out about this Lemuel William Hampson listed for entry in 1920, they replied that they would not know if he was an imposter and the Bella Hampson also listed was possibly no connection. I have manage to find her family and she crossed with her sister and brother in law. She is no relation to our Hampsons

I am so pleased that at last a problem has been solved regarding Edwin Wood, it's only because I sent for the marriage cert for him that arrived a couple of days ago that I have been going into in depth.I never realised that. it was Edwin Wood travelled on the passport of Grandad , I thought it may have been a neighbour or friend. Nothing was ever said that Edwin had left Grandma.

sorry John had to leave.
Found the military record and I think it must be your Edwin:-
British Army WWI Pension Records 1914-1920 about Edwin Wood Name: Edwin Wood Estimated Birth Year: abt 1882 Age at enlistment: 33 Document Year: 1915 Regimental Number: 13096 Regiment Name: Royal Fusiliers 25th Battalion Number of images: 3
Having a look at what it says he does give his occupation as Transport agent, West Africa, but his medical record gives his occuption as Book Keeper, and next of kin is his father. If it had been the other Edwin, he would have given his next of kin as his wife and his marriage and children would have been listed on his record, as he was married in 1904. I think the military record is therefore, your Edwin. He didn't stay in the army very long as the record also states that he served only 17 days. He was discharged on medical grounds (no longer fit for service).

I am amazed that Edwin Wood only served in the army for 17 days and was given an army pension.
