Flip - the Canada wide census was held on years ending in "1".
Because they were giving away free farm land on the prairies, it was anticipated there would be abnormal population changes in the 3 prairie provinces (AB, SK, MB), so they had an extra intercalated census on years ending with "6" starting in 1906, just after AB & SK became provinces. From 1906 on, all censuses were held in June. In Canada, parlamentary boundaries are driven by population size, so this was a primary reason for holding censuses (in US too). This was quite unlike the UK, where (even after the Great Reform Act), folk were not enfranchized in general - only "the right sort of man" was enfranchized, so who needed a general census for that.

[The left column has links to the search page for each census - 1921 has a link to the browse page (which is free for now, and the census is uninderxed as yet)]

The tree on ancestry has him getting married 12/9/1913 to Winifred Mary Wallis, who was born 1884 Solihull. They have 5 children (2 private) but the other 3 born in Brandon, Manitoba.

There's no certificates, but the tree has exact dates.

Have you looked for Winifred in the 1916 census? (I didn't know there was one!)

Thanks foe the feedback...the plaque named all the brothers George, William, Andrew, David, John, Thomas, Frank, Robert. (among others not part of my family).

The top of the Plaque reads: Branxton School
1914-1919
Old Scholars who served in the Great War

I did search in Canada, however can find no Attestation Papers for him, nor can I find him in the 1916 Census.

You can look up the attestation papers of Canadian WW1 soldiers at:
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/cef/001042-100.01-e.php
There are 11 Robert Rankins - 4 with pob=Glasgow, 1 in Co Derry, 1 in Norfolk, and 1 from Berwick-on-Tweed (# 5452). The other 4 had pob=Canada (2 each Ont & NB). None were born on 17 March, and none said they were born in 1884 (but lies abt year of birth did happen).

Was the plaque about soldiers from Branxton who had served, not died?

There is a tree on ancestry which has him getting married in Manitoba, Canada in 1913, and his death in 1961 in British Colombia. Are you sure it was your Robert on the memorial?

Hi all, hoping someone can help, I was recently in Branxton, Northumberland and saw a plaque with my Grandfathers name on it as a soldier of WWI. He was born in Branxton March 17, 1884. I have not been able to locate his military record. Thank you so much for the assistance, greatly appreciated
