Sarah Report 30 Aug 2013 19:41

I've been trying for many years without success to find details about Dinah's parents. She was born to Job Meigh and 'Sarah' in around 1813 in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, but baptised in 1815 in Bucknall-cum-Bagnall. On her marriage certificate Dinah gives her father's occupation as 'potter'. I'm wondering if there's a connection to the Meighs of Ash Hall, an established pottery manufacturing family in the area, but I've been unable to find any marriage for a Job Meigh and a 'Sarah'.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Sarah :-)

Found this on the net,

""Bucknall is situated about a mile and a half east of Hanley. Eaves was once an adjoining hamlet to the north-east. The area, formerly predominantly rural with scattered early coal-workings, is now a largely residential suburb of Hanley......

The main estate in Eaves was called The Ash and a large house called Ash Hall was built on a site overlooking Bucknall by Job Meigh, a local landowner. It was considered to have ‘every purpose of domestic comfort, very few modern houses will bear comparison’."

This is the only Job they list who is around the right age to be Dinah's father, but he married an Elizabeth.

1784 Born, the son of Job Meigh I
1805 Married Elizabeth, daughter of William Mellor of Johnson’s Charles Street Pottery in Hanley

The works of John Astbury (d. 1743) is said to have passed to John Baddeley (d. 1772) and are identified with the pottery on the west side of High Street (now Broad Street), Shelton.

From 1750 to 1772 the works were operated by Ralph & John Baddeley -

"Mr R Baddeley first made the Blue printed ware; and which subjected him and his brother to the highest censure for extravagance, in having a manufactory covered with tiles, instead of thatch; and for being the first who erected four hovels behind, instead of only two..."

After John died in 1772 the works were continued by Ralph and then from 1784 to 1806 by John & Edward Baddeley.

From 1806 to 1822 the works were operated by Hicks & Meigh.

Job Meigh II initially worked for his father in the Old Hall Pottery but by 1807 he had left to go into partnership with Richard Hicks, his brother-in-Law
In 1815 they rebuilt the Broad Street works in a typical rectangular courtyard plan with the kilns in a line along the rear.

Job Meigh (55) is on the 1841 census, but no wife with him. He is then on the 1851/61 census with wife Elizabeth - I wonder if Sarah had died and he remarried - there's a possible marriage to Elizabeth Washington in 1848.

If it is the same Job Meigh, his will may be able to give more clues and confirm whether he was the father of Dinah.

Job Meigh
Probate Date:1 Mar 1862
Death Date:30 Jan 1862
Death Place:Staffordshire, England
Registry:Lichfield

He left under £45000. Of Ash Hall, probate granted to son William Mellor Meigh, and John Michae Blagg & Thomas Goddard. There was a will and 2 codicils.

Elizabeth died in 1870, also leaving a will and codicil.

I don't think it is the same Job Meigh, the marriage cert for Dinah would maybe confirm this she married in 1837 to John Plant and Dinah Plant married again in 1850 to Samuel Jenkinson .

There is a death for Job Meigh in 1846 could this be Dinah's dad.
The Job from Ash Hall was son of Job who died 1817 and Job of Ash hall died 1862.

Edit I see the poster has wedding certificate,so what was the address of Dinah on the certificate please.

I guess Sarah can see the board, as I've had this PM

"Thanks for the info about job Meigh, that was something I'd not seen before. I knew the Job Meigh of Ash Hall had married an Elizabeth, and had son Charles. I'll look into the will in more depth now - still some digging to do I think! "

Sarah, if you look at the bottom of your thread you will find a box headed "Add your reply" If you type in the box and click on the "Submit" button your replies will be added to your thread so everyone can see them.
