AlfredC Report 26 Aug 2013 21:57

I am trying to trace details of my biological Father (Alfred Hudson), I do not have any family history for his side of the family. All I know is that his family were Trawler Owners in Hull & Grimsby in the 20th century (Hudson Brothers Steamship Co). I have been able to find references to him in the Hull Daily Mail of Mon Feb 11th 1946 where he was reported on giving a lecture on "Hulls Fishing Industry" to the branch of the Geograhical Association, at that meeting a number of members were present for the first time following their demobilisation. I would estimate his birth about 1920 and his ship was stationed in Belfast Nr Ireland in 1943 during WW2. I know it is not a lot to go on, and I am a novice when it comes to researching family history. Any help would be much appreciated, and a photograph is what I would treasure most.

Have you looked for possible births for him on free bmd?

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

(I cannot see any for Hull from 1918 to 1922 but there are 2 for Sculcoates)

Have you looked for a local historical society that may have more information on Hudson Brothers Steamship Co?

I have joined the East Yorkshire Family History Society (EYFHS). There is a lot of information available in Hull but if I went there myself I think I would just waste my time without a plan of action? I had hoped that they may have had members that would be able to help new members. They have a Maritime Museum that holds a lot of documentation on the Fishing Industry's History in the city, but I don't know if I would be able to access this myself.

If you do not know what you can access yourself, then email them to find out.

People like to help, so ask.

Alfred you say that Alfred Hudson is your biological Father but you no nothing about his family,

I take it that your father is not named on your birth certificate or you were adopted?

If he married your mother then you need the marriage cert to find his fathers name and both "occupations" then you can go from their in order to establish a link with the Hudson Bros

I have looked up the two Births for Sculcoats, but I do not know what his mothers name was so how can I be sure it is the correct Alfred Hudson?

Porkie_Pie

Porkie_Pie Report 26 Aug 2013 23:10

Their are 5 births for a Alfred Hudson born between 1911 and 1926 Sculcoates and all list the mothers maiden name, To find mothers Christian names look for a marriage between both surnames.

It would help if you answered questions asked, Instead of asking more questions

I think he was probably already married when he met my mother during the war, He is not on my Birth Certificate. But my name is Alfred Hudson Cumberland on the birth certificate. I was adopted by my mothers husband when I was 3 years old and did not know he was not my father, my stepfather was a prisoner of war when I was born in Belfast, and I was brought up by my grandparents until I was 3 years old when I came to live with my mother & stepfather in Brighton. I am sure Hudson Brothers Trawler Co Ltd must be quite well known in Hull & Grimsby and there is probably a lot of historical documents available, its just finding out the best way of accessing the information. Thank you very much for the help you have offered to me.
My grandparents, and my mothers brothers did not ever talk about my birth details and I did not come to know about them until later in life by accident.

Sorry Roy,

I am not used to using the system, and find it a little confusing when replying to more than one person at the same time. I really am very appreciative of the help being offered and aware of the difficulties of not having any information that easily links.

Kind Regards,

Alfred.

As I said before, initially email or even phone up any contacts you have found, such as the Hull History centre, to see what they can tell you about the documents they have and how you can access them.

So where has your fathers name come from? simply speculation on your part?

AlfredC

AlfredC Report 27 Aug 2013 10:56

I overheard my Grandmother talking to a professional person at the time of my mothers divorce, and she said of course you know he is not his father, referring to my stepfather. After my grandparents death my two uncles met my biological father (who they knew from the time of my birth) on a train, they told him about me, and he told them he was married. I did not ever feel that I could ask my mother about the details, but after her death my uncle told me that my father's family were Trawler Owners in Grimsby, and I was named after him on my birth certificate (Alfred Hudson Cumberland). I have since found out from my sister that a one off payment was made to my mother by my father acknowledging me as his child. That is all the information I have to go on.

what about this!!

Charles Hudson born Greenwich kent a mariner marriedBelinda matilda Cogswell 30/4/1877

They had Charles 1878,the one in Hull who died 1931.
Archibald 1889 born Great Grimsby died Hull 27/10/1959 he married Amy Gibbons in hull 1913 she died 1980.
Archibald became manager of Hudson Brothers trawlers in 1932.

Belinda Matilda Hudson died 26/7/1938 and left money to Thomas Hudson steam trawler owner and Archibald Hudson an engineer.

Alfred J Hudson born J/A/S 1920 in Grimsby 7a 1217 nee Gibbons.

There are trees on Ancestry .co.uk with Archibald and Amy but they don't have them having a son,but they could be wrong.
Maybe it would be worth buying his birth cert.

Marriage maybe
Alfred J Hudson married in Grimsby O/N/D 1946 3b 696 to Rosalind M Pickett and had 1 girl and 2 boys.
