It is unfortunate that she was not with her parents on the 1911 census

If you order her birth certificate from the GRO
http://www.gro.gov.uk/ £9.25 it will give you the parents names

If you can get to the records office in Sheffield you could try looking for her baptism. The census says she was born in Carbrook so you could try the nearest church

Matt - now that Linda has transfered her finds, don't forget to delete the original thread. Just delete the first post and the whole lot will disappear.

So I suppose it could be either one?

LindainHerriotCountry

LindainHerriotCountry Report 24 Aug 2013 23:05

The only Sheffield marriage I can see is the one I posted. If that is the correct marriage then buying that certificate will give her fathers name,so he would know which 1911 family is the correct one

Matt

Matt Report 24 Aug 2013 23:07

She married John Richard Benton.
They lived in Hillsborough.

LindainHerriotCountry

LindainHerriotCountry Report 24 Aug 2013 23:13

In that case you will need to buy their marriage certificate so you can know for certain who the fathers are before you go backwards

The only way not to buy it would be to visit the records office in Sheffield and to look through the church records on micro film for June to Sept 1930 assuming you could guess which church it was

Hi Matt, as you've seen from the census there are two very strong contenders and it would be very easy to follow the wrong branch.

To be sure of the right line you need Phyllis' marriage certificate to see who it names as her father. The details are posted above. You can order a copy from GRO for £9.25
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

Matt

Is this the death of your grand mother? if it is it gives her date of birth

Name: BENTON, Phyllis
Registration district: Sheffield
County: Yorkshire
Year of registration: 1994
Month of registration: November
Date of birth: 30 August 1902
District no: 0481H
Reg no: H59A
Ent no: 029
DOR: 1194

In that case the birth registration would be the first one found

Name: Phyllis Ackrill
Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1902
Registration District: Sheffield
Inferred County: Yorkshire West Riding
Volume: 9c
Page: 683

Assuming the date of birth on the burial was correct, they had 6 weeks to register the birth, so that could take it into the Oct-Dec period of 1902

LindainHerriotCountry

LindainHerriotCountry Report 25 Aug 2013 10:40

This would be your grandfathers death

Name: BENTON, John Richard
Registration district: Sheffield

Year of registration: 1996
Month of registration: August
Date of birth: 25 March 1902

Reg no: G52A
Ent no: 147
DOR: 896

Thank you very much. The birth was correct, so you are saying that it as the first census you provided. That she wasn't living with her parents as it states she was a niece. So as advised I need get copies of either birth or marriage certificate to ascertain parents .

As you're new poster, do you know where to get certificates from?

Although you can get them from the issuing Register Office, the only online site you should use is

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

Each certificate will cost £9.25 using a debit or credit card and includes 2nd class P&P.
Use the references provided on the thread which were orriginally found on the GRO indexes.

If you purchase from Sheffield Regiter Office, they have a different system of numbering and might cost a bit more. Year, quarter and name should suffice to help them track down the correct certificate
