Hi Kim

You said on your new thread that you couldn't find Edith on the 1911 census. Marie posted it on page one of this thread, Edith shown as Eda

This looks to be her death

Birth Date:abt 1881

Date of Registration:Dec 1960

PS You should delete that new thread and just add to this one

Rootgatherer... I have written it down.. I cant find a divorce for her so I can only assume she either remarried without divorcing her cad of a husband or she never remarried.... tricky one..
He never married his mistress just kept having kids with her...

I've found Edith Annie Norton in previous census, also Martha Horton and they do seem to be unrelated, just very similar surnames.

There are two trees on Ancestry, one has him just with wife Edith Annie and the girls, another has him with spouse Martha and quite a few children up to the 1920s (all seem to have been registered as Horton).

Edith Norton, Martha Horton - I want to investigate Martha just to make sure she's not Edith's sister.

ADDED: I've checked the original images of both 1911 census. Both were allegedly completed by James Caldwell but it is the one when he was with his wife and children where the signature matches that on his army records. Naughty Martha.

He was discharged 1915, no further info after that. His military conduct was better than his marital. He had two good conduct badges.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 18 Aug 2013 16:35

Kim, yes it looks like he was being a bad lad - will add to the pension record above when I've finished scribbling.

ADDED:
He married Edith Annie Norford 08 Apr 1904. They had:

Margaret Annie 13 Feb 1905 Beverley
Catherine 07 Jan 1908 Gateshead
Edith 10 Dec 1910 Hull

EDIT: They match the names scratched out on the 1911. So he was playing away with Martha while his wife was pregnant.

Kim Annette

Kim Annette Report 18 Aug 2013 16:30

could be will look into that.. but with the 1911 info.. looked at the original
he is married
she is not
childs name Martha Caldwell Horton.... hmmmm....

also written down the bottom is three childrens names and ages then crossed out. all with the surname Caldwell....

was he playing away from home.......
more mystery,,,
