Yes, I really do think Gordon's enumerated twice. There definitely seems to just have been the one birth for that name (when I first saw two 1930 census records I initially assumed two different men).

This is the other recorded (I've deleted the 100 or so other patients!)

1930 United States Federal Census
Name: Gordon E Patchett
Gender: Male
Birth Year: abt 1910
Birthplace: Massachusetts
Race: White
Home in 1930: Medfield, Norfolk, Massachusetts
Map of Home: View Map
Marital Status: Single
Relation to Head of House: Patient
Father's Birthplace: Massachusetts
Mother's Birthplace: Massachusetts

Household Members:
Gordon E Patchett 20

He's in the Medfield State Hospital.

I think the lack of a Social Security death record for him indicates the poor chap was possibly never registered for a number if unable to work through ill health.

Looks like John R moved around quite a bit:

U.S. Public Records Index, Volume 1
Name: John R Patchett
Birth Date: 30 Mar 1924
Address: 424 Stratford CT, Del Mar, CA, 92014-2755 (1988)
[2035 Edgewood Dr, South Pasadena, CA, 91030-3919 (1970)]
[4050 Wilshire Bv, Los Angeles, CA, 90010]

This other record shows the Arizona connection:

U.S. Public Records Index, Volume 1
Name: John R Patchett
Birth Date: 30 Mar 1924
Phone Number: 282-2419
Address: 424 Stratford CT, Del Mar, CA, 92014-2755 (1988)
[220 Shadow Mountain Dr, Sedona, AZ, 86336-3406 (1990)]
[2035 Edgewood Dr, South Pasadena, CA, 91030-3919]

That's exactly what I was thinking Mo

MaureeninNY

MaureeninNY Report 11 Aug 2013 16:01

MC- do you think Gordon was enumerated twice?

Maureen

EDIT: OK...I was away for a bit there, !830??

Maddie

This looks like John R's death:

U.S., Social Security Death Index, 1935-Current
Name: John R. Patchett
Last Residence: 86336 Sedona, Coconino, Arizona
Born: 30 Mar 1924
Died: 9 Sep 2005
State (Year) SSN issued: Massachusetts (Before 1951)

Maddie

Maddie Report 11 Aug 2013 15:57

guess it could be,
seems he was there in 1935 if i read it correctly

I'm starting to think that those census records DO relate to the same person. Maybe he was a long term in-patient but his family recorded him as part of the family on the 1930?

EDIT: OK, I've amended 1830 to 1930 (now that would have been a really long hospital stay).

MarieCeleste Report 11 Aug 2013 15:14

This is the correct Gordon Edward with his parents in 1930:

1930 United States Federal Census

Name: Gordon E Patchett
Gender: Male
Birth Year: abt 1910
Birthplace: Massachusetts
Race: White
Home in 1930: Winthrop, Suffolk, Massachusetts
Map of Home: View Map
Marital Status: Single
Relation to Head of House: Son
Father's Name: Samuel C Patchett
Father's Birthplace: Massachusetts
Mother's Name: Grace S Patchett
Mother's Birthplace: Massachusetts

Household Members:
Name Age
Samuel C Patchett 50
Grace S Patchett 49
Gordon E Patchett 20 - No occupation
John R Patchett 6

The other Gordon E is in hospital in 1930 so that 1940 census seems to be for the other one.

Just establishing Gordon's birthplace:

Massachusetts, Birth Records, 1840-1915

Birth Place: Somerville, Massachusetts, USA
Father: Samuel C Patchett - Railway Clerk
Mother: Grace Shurtleff
Lived 32 Milton Street, Somerville.
