His father/Step father was James Grindrod B 1847 Rochdale, Lancashire, died 1914 Devon.

The 1911 says James and Fanny had been married 29 years which is a bit of a fiction as they were'nt wed on the 1891, it's more likely how long they'd been together:

I'd be surprised if there was a father's name on the birth certificate.

I notice that on the 1891 James is married, I presume to someone else? I see also that Hetty was born in Yorkshire so I'm wondering if Fanny had been up north and that's how she met James and they came south together?
