19 was rather young for a marriage in those days..............

This looks more likely.............

If Elizabeth Gilbert was a widow on that 1815 marriage then wouldn't that be her previously married name and not her maiden name?

How, therefore, could that particular woman's father be Joseph Gilbert?

Thank you for your efforts and quick responses. The difference in dob for William on the 1851 and 1841 census is confusing - the family members appear to be the same in both census records though. I'm really looking for a way to trace Williams parents. Can't find anything online in parish records. - has anybody got any bright ideas?

Thanks
Steve

1841 census rounded down the ages of over-15's to the nearest 5

The County Records office seems to be the only likely source of info

And....you may need to re-think your 'info' about Elizabeth's father.............

Thanks Reggie,
Would you please let me know why I should think ELizabeths father ?

Thanks I see that Gilbert is her maiden name. Will now look for her previous marriage record. Steve

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 9 Aug 2013 19:56

Steven, Gilbert isn't her maiden name!

If she married as Gilbert then that would be her married name NOT her maiden name. When a woman is widowed and remarries she does so in her current married name.

So the Elizabeth Gilbert who married in 1815 would have had a different surname when she was born. So, if you are looking for an Elizabeth Gilbert who had a father Joseph Gilbert it's quite likely not this one.

I think you need to review how you've connected to these people and then we'll try to make sure everything's on the right track.

ErikaH Report 9 Aug 2013 22:32

I meant this bit!

"Elizabeth Gilbert is a widow. Witnesses were Mary Amelia Lynch and John Lynch."

So Elizabeth had been married BEFORE................

Where did you get the info about her father's name?

Which, if any, of these people is your PROVEN direct ancestor?
