Hello Joanne, do you have William Charles' birth and marriage certificates to confirm his father's details?

Do you know where William Charles was born?

Hi

I have his marriage certificate to Florence Smith and this confirms that his father was Charles William Harvey who was a fisherman, that is all I have I'm afraid.

Joanne

Joanne Report 21 Jul 2013 10:57

Yes that is correct, my grandfather is William Matthew born 1905.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 21 Jul 2013 11:01

Joanne - was there an actual address for William on the marriage certificate? Does it look like any of the witnesses could be family members? Did it mention if his father was deceased?

The only William I've found so far with a father called Charles was one where the father was a tobacconist.

Joanne

Joanne Report 21 Jul 2013 11:05

William was listed as living at 79 Sussex Street, Cleethorpes. It does not mention that Charles was deceased and the only other family members listed are Matthew William Smith and Frances Emily Smith who were witnesses and on Florences side of the family by the look of it.

I found the same family as MarieCeleste. This looks like them in the 1891 census. His father here is a Grocer and in 1901 is a tobacconist. Perhaps his father changed occupations a lot:-

Jude, the 1891 shows that Charles William was the elder brother of William ......

I took it that the Charles William (father of William who married Florence) was a fisherman at the time of the marriage.

Joanne - where did you get the potential birth year of 1849 for the father?

KathleenBell

In 1911 there is a family called TILLING living at 79 Sussex Street.

ah yes MC! ;-)

Joanne - what was William's occupation and age on the marriage certificate?

Jude

Joanne

Joanne Report 21 Jul 2013 11:35

The marriage certificate of William Charles Harvey and Florence Smith states that Charles William's occupation was fisherman, the date of the marriage was Aug 25th 1901.
To be honest I'm not sure where the date of Charles Williams birth came from, poss my mother.
I know that I really need Williams birth certificate.

Joanne

Joanne Report 21 Jul 2013 11:37

Williams occupation was listed as Labourer on the marriage certificate and he was listed as 21 years old.
