Find Ancestors

I would be very grateful for information on William Casson's parents. I am trying to research the Casson surname and I have hit a brick wall having found William Casson, born in 1821.

He was born in 1821 in Turton, Bolton, Lancashire.

His first wife was called Ellen, and she died in 1856, having had 4 children: Amelia Casson, born 1845, Thomas Casson, born 1847, William Casson born 1850 and Daniel Casson born 1852. I know no other information about Ellen.

His second wife was a Catherine Standley, born c1825 and died 1892. She was born and married in Bolton but died in Chorlton. She was a midwife. I think they married in 1857, and they had three children: Margaret Casson born 1860, Alfred Casson born 1862 and Walter Casson born 1863.

I hope this helps identify him: the earliest record I can find for William Casson, born 1821 is the 1841 census in which he was aged 20 lived in Sand Hole Street, Bolton. Appears to live with Mum Mary Casson, age 55, and siblings Mary, Betsey, and Agey. There's a 2 year old Mary Casson too - is this a grandchild of the 55 year old Mary? And who are her parents?

I don't know how to check whether the Mary Casson age 55 listed above is William Casson's mother; I think it is likely but I can't be sure. And how do I discover her maiden name and her husband's name?

I am a bit confused - is there a third wife in there somewhere, a Margaret Hamer? There appears to be two wives at the same time, Margaret Hamer and Catherine.

Some records for William Casson have him born in 1821, others 1820 - how likely is it that it's the same William Casson? It doesn't seem likely that there could have been too many in Bolton at the same time...

I think Ellen Alman is a definite - thank you very very much!

Unfortunately I don't have the marriage certificates - everything I know has been found through searching through records on GR. So I'm not certain that eveything is reliable.

Potty: I'm pretty sure that the record you found from 1861 is the right family - all the names of the children match up.

Jaqueline, it looks as if he first married Ellen, then Margaret Hamer who appears to have died sometime between 1857 and 1859 and he then married Catherine Marsh, a widow, whose maiden name was Pendlebury. But, I can't find a death for Margaret.
