I extracted the census details below from Find My Past, I believe this relates to Richard Reid who married Margaret Thomson in 1829, I have confirmed their marriage and their deaths on Scotlands People, however my problem is that despite numerous searches on Scotlands People I can only trace the birth of one child and that is Robert, see below, so my question is can anyone suggest what I may be doing wrong or should I perhaps just settle for the information on this census in respect of the children?
09/02/1838 REID ROBERT RICHARD REID/MARGARET THOMSON FR2944 (FR2944) M FALKIRK /STIRLING 479/00 0110 0028

Thanks Reggie - I am sure many of those on here who use Scotlands People know the in's and out's of it are far more expert than I am, especially when it comes to tweaking the searches to get the best results ;-) I just get so :-S

I don't use Scotlandspeople but isn't it only for births after 1837, like our FreeBMD ?
If so, only the last 2 would show anyway?
Try looking for baptisms on FamilySearch.org - I found this one but haven't time to look further at the minute:
Robert Reid, "Scotland, Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950" Name: Robert Reid Gender: Male Christening Date: 11 Mar 1838 Christening Place: , FALKIRK, STIRLING, SCOTLAND Birth Date: 09 Feb 1838
Father's Name: Richard Reid Mother's Name: Margaret Thomson

Thanks Vicci - tried using name variant in my search in parish records but only one child Robert came up.
On Scotlands People the parish records search stretches from 01/01/1538 to 31/12/1854.
On FamilySearch.org there are two children attributed to them, a William Reid born 1830 and a David Reid born 1832.
I originally thought that the family in my opening post in the 1841 Census was the right family, however I am having doubts now as I have only traced child Robert on Scotlands People, the two others I found on FamilySearch.org, that being William and David, I nave not been able to verify as they only appear in a Pedigree Resource File.
I hate it when I get stuck and :-S like this, makes me want to scream :-(

Prior to 1855 when it became Statutory births in Scotland were recorded by the local parish.....not all births were recorded, it depended partly on what denomination people were. Lots of Old Parish records have been lost or damaged. Some were even destroyed by the parishes rather than passing them to the Registrar General in 1855.

Pre 1855 there was no facility to record any births.
Only baptismal records were kept, and in some cases, not all, a birth date was given. By the same token, not all children were born in the parish of their baptism
James, If the baptisms are not found on FS, there is very little chance that they would be found on SP. The LDS transcribed most/all OPRs and they really didn't miss very much.
If the baptism for just one child was missing from FS, then I would check SP, but the fact that there are 3 or 4 missing entries more or less proves that the record is either lost, missing or the child was not baptised.
I also had a look at the batch numbers for Falkirk and there are no missing birth years (inclusive for this family) If these children were baptised in Falkirk, their record never made it onto the OPR.

GlasgowLass, alviegal, and Aileen,
My thanks to everyone for your valuable contributions, they are all very much appreciated.
I checked out the Census years for 1841; 1851; 1861; and 1871 on Find My Past and looking at these alongside the information that you have provided I am reasonably confident that the family in the 1841 Census is the correct family.
Having exhausted every avenue, I have to agree with what Anne and Aileen say about many old parish records being either lost, missing, or destroyed, I know from correspondence I have had with Register House in Edinburgh about other ancestors of mine, this was often the situation, so I am going to accept the information on the 1841 Census as being the family in question and add them to my tree.
Thank you all again,
Jim

I think this from FamilySearch.org is the birth details for Richard Reid, Scotlands People only show the 18 April 1802 date.
To double check I looked at Richard Reid's Death Certificate to verify this, however there appears to be an error with his mother's name on that. I read it as being Jean Wotherspoon his mother-in-law. so before I mark this thread as answered can one of you, if I forward a copy of his Death Certificate, have a look at it and confirm my suspicions are correct.
from FamilySearch.org:-
Scotland, Births and Baptisms, 1564-1950 birth: 3 April 1802 christening: 18 April 1802 , OLD MONKLAND, LANARK, SCOTLAND residence: 1802 Old Monkland, Lanarkshire, Scotland
Parents:William Reid, Janet Cuningham
From Scotlands People:-
18/04/1802 REID RICHARD WILLIAM REID/JANET CUNINGHAM FR215 (FR215) M OLD MONKLAND OR COATBRIDGE /LANARK 652/00 0010 0265
Many Thanks,
Jim

Thanks Jude, my eyesight is not good at the best of times, but that is what I took it to be, It must be a mistake made by son George when registering death as Jean Wotherspoon was in fact Richard Reid's mother-in-law and she was married to a David Thomson.
Many Thanks,
Jim

My research on this family is still giving me major headaches, having sorted out Richard I decided to try and find information about his parents William Reid and Janet Cunningham.
I have found birth details on Scotlands People for 7 children born to a William Reid and a Janet Cunningham between 1790 and 1803 in the Old Monkland area of Lanarkshire but I have not been able to find out anything about the marriage of William Reid and Janet Cunningham.
However I did find the information below on Familysearch.org on an IGI File
name: Janet Cunningham [1] gender: female birth: about 1771 of Brachney, Lanark, Scotland [1] other: batch number: A24814-5 IGI batch type code: 1 IGI film number: 184770 Show children (7) *** These are the same 7 children I identified on Scotlands People ***
name: William Reid [1] gender: male birth: about 1769 of Brachney, Lanark, Scotland [1] other: batch number: A24814-5 IGI batch type code: 1 IGI film number: 18477
I also found 2 people with trees on here with a Janet Cunningham/Cuningham born in Lanarkshire in 1773 and I contacted them but to date I have not had any response.
Any help or advice in tracing information on William Reid and Janet Cunningham would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jim

Barrachnie is a place in Glasgow, Scotland adjacent to Garrowhill.
It was an ancient fermtoun which was mentioned in the Glasgow Protocols and had many entries in the rental book of the Bishopric of Glasgow in the Middle Ages - 14th.day June,1520 Wyl Morisone in xixs vijd land of Barrachnie. Like the other parts of the district it was part of the Barony and Regality of Glasgow and from about 1600, also of the parish of Old Monkland
The first coal mined in the Baillieston district was in the Barrachnie pit.
The etymology of the name is not easy as it has appeared under many configurations and its evolution to the present form is difficult to understand as it is pronounced "Brachney" - just as it was in the 15th. century.
